Re: Nostalgia Time! What's your 3 Fave Songs?

Anybody else remember the old "New Orleans Sound" R&B of the early 60's? Not the hard-driving stuff (like that, too!), but songs like "A Certain Girl" by Ernie K. Doe, "I Know" by Barbara George, and "Lipstick Traces" by Benny Spellman. Like it or not, it was as unique and distinctive as Doo-Wop, Rockabilly, California/Surf, or any other R&R genre.

Re: Nostalgia Time! What's your 3 Fave Songs?

A lot of Woody Guthries' songs still have meaning today even 60-70 later.

God Blessed America]
This Land Was Made For You And Me
This land is your land, this land is my land
From [the] California to the [Staten] New York Island,
From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf stream waters,
[God blessed America for me.]
As I went walking that ribbon of highway
And saw above me that endless skyway,
And saw below me the golden valley, I said:
[God blessed America for me.]

I roamed and rambled and followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts,
And all around me , a voice was sounding:
[God blessed America for me.]

Was a high wall there that tried to stop me
A sign was painted said: Private Property,
But on the back side it didn't say nothing --
[God blessed America for me.]

When the sun come shining, then I was strolling
In wheat fields waving and dust clouds rolling;
The voice was chanting as the fog was lifting:
[God blessed America for me.]

One bright sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple
By the Relief Office I saw my people --
As they stood hungry, I stood there wondering if
[God blessed America for me.]

A few of the others.

Re: Nostalgia Time! What's your 3 Fave Songs?

My high school english teacher also taught Norah Jones in Texsas before she moved here. She told us a story how Norah was in the school band and played the trumpet or something of that sort. And when they found out she became a singer a few years later, she went to the band teacher and told him about it and he said it was a good thing because she wasn't a very good trumpet player. Small world.

warsawdaddy,
"Alice's Restaurant"!
OMG does that take me back! had that on 8track and me and a girl named Beth drove up to Flannigan Reservoir and played it until it started dragging in the player!

Another oldie but goodie...Puff the Magic Dragon. (And for those old hippies. you know what it was about!)

Re: Nostalgia Time! What's your 3 Fave Songs?

I'm a child of the 50s and 60s and even though I like some of lthe later rock and roll, will always remember the early stuff. Believe it or not I was not an Elvis fan particularly. So, I guess I'd have to say anything from that era. I had a new favorite song every time I fell in love! I fell in love a lot. Got my heart broken a lot too! The platters, Roy Orbison, all the Motown sound, Fats Domino, Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, .....Christ, I loved them all! Still do! Monty
