I have been collecting rocks and minerals for quite awhile, so has my son, he has as well as i have found so many i have been dismissing them as just rocks. or i thought maybe water or glacier made? I am very much a newbie. i have found that identifying these are as fun or funner then finding them!! We have literally found hundreds of maybe artifcacts. just gotta get them rounded up and hopefully they are still where i left them in the barn or misc stashes on property. This property is 60 miles from canadien border 25 miles from fort union fur trading post, fort buford as well they are at the confluence of the missouri and yellowstone, 15 miles from montana border, about 60 miles from fort kipp where Sitting bull finally surrendered, the great norther railroad the empire builder tracks laid a few miles from here in the 1880s, i have found lots of stones with holes in them, and grooved rock tools, lots of knife river flint tools, muscovite, sandstone, quartzite, formicah, there was an old building made out of railroad ties on the property when grandpa bought it in the late 50s, it had a stone like foundation, as well as a few other foundations on the property but just the foundations, no buildings, it sits on top of a ridge thats the highest point coming out of the basin and the flood plains of the river bottoms, on top of the ridge my dad can remember there was 3 stone cirlces completly enclosed circles, and more cirlces scattered amongst the ridge, i can remember it somewhat to and i remember it as 10 to 12 feet across on the average cirlce, there have been a huge indian burial grounds recently disovered a few miles from here, as well as i have seen some cast iron crosses and cemetaries for english and settlers dating back to 1890s, my great great grandparents were immigrants from norway, my others were from russia and german descent, scandinavian and french canadien and native american is common in the area, assiniboine, lakota sioux, blackfeet to the west, nakota, flathead is to the west with fort peck, and fort berthold to south east, there is lot of artifacts along the river, and the lake when its low, there is the badlands to the south about 60 miles to 75 miles, with some coulees and pretty rugged terrain maybe only 20 miles away, mandan indian tribe about 200 miles down river or less, so there is many options, someone thought it was jesuit? Some think native american? it is known that french fur traders frequented the area to trade with natives, and is also known jesuit were in the area especially in montana for logging, this land we have has been untouched minus the family for many years, we have found perfectly round rocks, we have found so many notched rocks, and just so many amazing pieces that i passed off as just normal to be finding. I know the glacier receeded somewhere right in this area as well, kettle lake is 30 miles away. and they have some good studies there. so my question is..... what do you think? do you know anything about the area in the late 1800s, i wish my great grandparents were around they first settled north closer to canada in the early 1900s. any history, or questions, or ideas, or anything would b emuch appreciated. I am debating if i should call the history recorder or someone to come out and have a look with me in case some important people settled here for awhile. Maybe Welsh indians? what are they exactly? I dont know. But i am glad i have found a further passion for my collections of rocks and what not, i think next step is metal detector and history books, and find some knowledgeable old timers to tell me stories!!
