No Idea What This is

I found this the other day. It looks to be the size of a butter dish with a design. I'm thinking it's purely decorative but I am curious as to if it has any practical use, when it was made and what it is made of. It is very heavy and has the number 479 on the back.

What are the dimensions? Also wondering about the composition. 479 seems like an alloy number, but not getting anything that makes real sense in a short web search. There is a nickel alloy #479, which could be it, but I was initially thinking pewter. A nickel alloy wouldn't need to be silver plated to be shiny.

Yeah, I saw that too last night in my searching. Could also be used as a pin tray. Ladies used a lot of pins in their hair back in the day.

I think the number may just be a pattern number.

cherrypicked- Your photos make it appear gold or brass in color. Is this correct or is it more of a silver looking finish? I'm thinking it's a silver plated item myself.

Definitely gold/brass in color. Some parts are darker and less shiny. Almost a bronze color and as I said it is fairly heavy. It is 10.5" long and 3.5" wide.

"479" refers to stainless steel most often. Hope this helps.
