I extracted this little bugger from the my back yard... It appears to be copper, and is hollow. dented on one side, it looks like a large button/ the holes on top, but doubt that it is....any ideas?

You don't need to have actual an actual battle site to pick up Civil War finds. I would agree on it being a button and have seen ball buttons on old Zouave uniforms online. There were both union and confederate Zouaves. I Googled Zouave and Florida and there is record of Louisiana Zouave battalion mustering at Pensacola to be sent to Petersburg. Might want to check that route. Cool button!

100% Correct and you would be surprised at how good of shape a 150 year old relic could be in the right soil condition. Might look like its only 50 years old. Looks like a Zouave Ball Button to me. Nice find

WOW...looking back into threads over 5 years old on account of my ball button? I am honored, but I have to admit that my piece doesn't compare to the Zouave buttons pictured in the post... mine is a bit bigger, smoother, and more modern looking. The thread holes are recessed more on mine, Thank you for the info and research to all, and trust me, if I thought this was a CW relic, I would post a pic w/ my arms crossed, and a smug look on my face. That will have to wait for my "BANNER" later on this year! LOL

Dave, as you probably know, not every ball button is a Zouave button. Large ball buttons were popular during the late 50s-early 60s on women's over coats. I put the post of the Zouave button so you could make a comparison. You're the only one seeing it in person, so you're the only one who can really judge whether it is a vintage ball coat button or a Zouave button. At any rate, you found an interesting button! :icon_thumright:

Well like I said, your help is greatly appreciated...A womans coat button from the 50's or 60's... gotta be it. Thank you!

Cool! didn't know all that.

You never know where a civil war item can pop up. I found a civil war heel plate here in mid coast Maine at an old foundation hole. There is virtually no record of actual civil war fighting here in Maine. Obviously there was a soldier that lived at this house at one time. You just never know. If you overthink some of this stuff it will drive you crazy. Cool find and best of luck out there, Abe
