You don't need to have actual an actual battle site to pick up Civil War finds. I would agree on it being a button and have seen ball buttons on old Zouave uniforms online. There were both union and confederate Zouaves. I Googled Zouave and Florida and there is record of Louisiana Zouave battalion mustering at Pensacola to be sent to Petersburg. Might want to check that route. Cool button!
My back yard, Old Ft Myers, FL...minimal civil war here...seems to be not THAT old, 50 or so years old I would guess... Thankyou for looking. It was a good question. HH
WOW...looking back into threads over 5 years old on account of my ball button? I am honored, but I have to admit that my piece doesn't compare to the Zouave buttons pictured in the post... mine is a bit bigger, smoother, and more modern looking. The thread holes are recessed more on mine, Thank you for the info and research to all, and trust me, if I thought this was a CW relic, I would post a pic w/ my arms crossed, and a smug look on my face. That will have to wait for my "BANNER" later on this year! LOL
Dave, as you probably know, not every ball button is a Zouave button. Large ball buttons were popular during the late 50s-early 60s on women's over coats. I put the post of the Zouave button so you could make a comparison. You're the only one seeing it in person, so you're the only one who can really judge whether it is a vintage ball coat button or a Zouave button. At any rate, you found an interesting button!
