I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

I moved ya from NEW MEMBER INTRODUCTIONS over to ROCKS/GEMS for more exposure.

I'll take a WAG at it and suggest it's some type of granite. :dontknow:

Initial impression: leaverite.

You could see if a magnet sticks to it, might be iron bearing since you said it's heavy.

My 2 cents is to put it back in the attic to confuse the next person in another 100 years

See if a magnet draws towards it, also a few pictures in natural lighting.

I have no idea what this type of rock is, but it has been in the family attic for 100+ years. Probably nothing but it is heavy and I am curious. Thoughts?

Thanks for any feedback!

Cal...
I want to thank everyone for their feedback. I just added a few more pics. Blue light pics up some specks.
Cheers! Cal...

Could you share the general region you're located? When you say blue light I assume you mean that's a UV light? And make sure the specimen is clean before hand otherwise you might just be picking up contaminants from the environment

Thanks for your reply. I'm located in Northeast US - NY / PA. I did use UV light. It also has streaks of shiny silver in the rock. No magnetism I can detect.

You might have some bits of Franklinite in that rock then!

You're in the right area (New Jersey) for that mineral which is a pretty neat find. Without physical examination it is really impossible to say for certain.

Thanks again for your feedback. No matter what, I really love the look and feel of the rock and the fact it was tucked away in a locked box in the family attic.
Cheers from Cal...
