I finally got the green light to get into the fields on a farm where I wanted to check if there was a Whiskey Rebellion encampment. This was my fourth trip to the farm but this time there were no hunters or workers in the fields, so he said go ahead. After spending about 2 hours zig zagging across the fields where I thought the camp might be with nothing to show for my efforts but a random indian head penny and a broken crotal bell, I moved over to an area where a house once stood. There are still some broken down barns and outbuilding there, so it was occupied well into the 20th century, but the house shows up on the old atlases. The house site being a tangled mess of underbrush, I hit the plowed field closest to the house site and found two worn coppers. One looks to be a draped bust LC when I put some wax on it and reflect the light at the right angle. The other is pretty thin and beat up by the plow. I also dug a buckle frag that looks colonial, and a large flat button with no backmark that looks to be from the "dandy" period. I dug a 1948 silver dime that had me going for a second until I realized what it was. On my way out I dug the half real, my last signal of the day. I was only in there for about an hour and 45 minites. The place is loaded with burnt coal hot rocks of all sizes, the larger ones give a pretty good signal. The farmer told me that at some point in the past, several guys took metal detectors in his fields, and returned about 10 times. They must have been finding something and may have been hunting the spot I found. However, with all the signals from hot rocks and trash, plus the fact that it is plowed field, I'm sure there is more to find even it if was hunted before.
