I finally got the green light to get into the fields on a farm where I wanted to check if there was a Whiskey Rebellion encampment. This was my fourth trip to the farm but this time there were no hunters or workers in the fields, so he said go ahead. After spending about 2 hours zig zagging across the fields where I thought the camp might be with nothing to show for my efforts but a random indian head penny and a broken crotal bell, I moved over to an area where a house once stood. There are still some broken down barns and outbuilding there, so it was occupied well into the 20th century, but the house shows up on the old atlases. The house site being a tangled mess of underbrush, I hit the plowed field closest to the house site and found two worn coppers. One looks to be a draped bust LC when I put some wax on it and reflect the light at the right angle. The other is pretty thin and beat up by the plow. I also dug a buckle frag that looks colonial, and a large flat button with no backmark that looks to be from the "dandy" period. I dug a 1948 silver dime that had me going for a second until I realized what it was. On my way out I dug the half real, my last signal of the day. I was only in there for about an hour and 45 minites. The place is loaded with burnt coal hot rocks of all sizes, the larger ones give a pretty good signal. The farmer told me that at some point in the past, several guys took metal detectors in his fields, and returned about 10 times. They must have been finding something and may have been hunting the spot I found. However, with all the signals from hot rocks and trash, plus the fact that it is plowed field, I'm sure there is more to find even it if was hunted before.

Congrats on the 1784 Half Reale Steve! :notworthy:
Sounds like that field might be worth a return trip, before the crop goes in.

Thanks Dave, I was a little disappointed with one of the coppers because it certainly was thick enough that you would expect to have some decent detail left. I am looking forward to a return trip.

I have been looking for this 1794 Whiskey Rebellion Camp for about 12 years off and on. I know I am very close.

Thanks Chris. I was very happy with condition of the half real. I have seen enough of them that are worn smooth or bent up. I was also happy to have found one since it had been about 14 months since I dug my last Spanish.

Keith, it would have been a very average hunt without the Spanish silver :laughing7:

That Spaniard is lovely! Silver Rosies are the worst, sometimes. I've killed myself cleaning out and hunting an 1800's farmsite and when I finally find silver it's a Rosey :BangHead:. Probably dropped by a hunter or something. A little, or a lot of, research pays off!

Alright, Steve! You are baaaaaaack. :headbang: I would hit that site a bunch of times since there are probably some shoe buckle frames around. :icon_thumleft: I am due for a nice piece of Spanish silver. It is going to be a Colonial year for you.

Kirk :hello:
