Hmmm, I am not an expert but I would strongly recommend being very careful. Did you find it at the shore? As you know there are three military bases with proving grounds in your area. Area beaches were closed last year due to the unexploded ordinance problem.

I found one like that 20 years ago and had to take it to the police to have the blow it up.
I would suggest you take it very carefully to your local police dept. and have the get rid of it for you.

good advice or a bad joke, you decide  :D

I vaguely remember a WW2 era Bugs Bunny cartoon where he ended up testing rounds of shells by hitting them with a hammer. I don't recommend that method. I agree, bring it to a police station, preferably one where you might have gone to to pay a traffic ticket. You'll never see the item again, but the look on the desk sergeant's face will stay with you for years to come.

Now this was funny, Curb! Reminds me of BeverlyHills Cops when Eddie Murphy acted like he had explosives in a bag to get back to see the one suspect in the case..anyone remember that?

And Especially do not discuss it on an internet Treasure forum, because that might make it angry.

It is a round from a 20mm Anti-Aircraft cannon, a few years back i attended a machine gun shootout at a gravel pit, tons of firearms, flamethrowers and other various weapons and they had a 20mm Anti-Aircraft cannon there as well, they fired 5 rounds from this cannon, i went back 2 days later after everyone had left and i recovered 3 of these rounds they look exactly like the one you are holding. Hope this helps.

Unless it was dug at a church, or in front of some type of medical clinic.
