I vaguely remember a WW2 era Bugs Bunny cartoon where he ended up testing rounds of shells by hitting them with a hammer. I don't recommend that method. I agree, bring it to a police station, preferably one where you might have gone to to pay a traffic ticket. You'll never see the item again, but the look on the desk sergeant's face will stay with you for years to come.

yeah, if it says DUD on it then its only a cartoon prop.

That's way bigger than a 20 mm. I was on an Air Force Weapons range and saw thousands of 20mm. In fact I have an inert one here on my desk! The hole is wher the fuse goes in if it is a timed charge. And DO NOT TAKE IT TO THE POLICE STATION!! THEY WILL EVACUATE THE BUILDING! PHONE AND LET THE BOMB SQUAD COME AND PICK IT UP WITH THEIR SPECIAL GEAR. Been there, done that! One moron PD Officer brought in a case of bleeding dynamite one time and ruined my whole day! Monty

Me thinks you are getting good advice here. Let us know what you do. Think safety. If we hear nothing ..........

Party-Pooper. Kidding, you are right, I would bring it to a field, and then call. Although in all honesty, any more moving of it would be inadvisable. Neighbors gonna think you had a meth lab in the basement.

That projectile is much larger than 20 MM Looks like close to 40MM Could possible be for an anti aircraft type weapon. In any event from the picture supplied the fuse is still installed. THIS IS A POTENTIAL DISASTER. Turn it in and be done with it.

As an ex-artillery guy, I can say it is definately BIGGER than 20 mm. Looks a bit small to be a 105mm. Maybe an 81mm mortar? Even then, it is the warhead, and probably inert. Just to be on the safe side, have the professionals check it out.

Based on the Pic it appears to be solid shot..as there is no fuse assembly on the tip...NOT a mortor round as there are no fins, and appears to be about a 57mm(a very common anti tank round during WW2 that used a solid shot)...it looks like the copper driving band is missing...BUT I would still treat it as previously recommended.

Agree. 20MM on the USMC's LAV's weren't even close to that :o I believe it is an old type of round not used anymore
