If it weren't for archeologists we wouldn't know nearly as much history as we do today. History gets lost every day and archeologists recover it. Besides we should respect archeologists because they do the same thing as us just bigger and better.
P.S. Part of an archeologists job is to prove their mentors wrong.

Uh-oh.

This might be of interest. Click on it a couple of times to enlarge and read. Regardless, that's a neat find. Congratulations.

Wow,thats the mis statement of the century....good luck on your degree though...you already have been brainwashed!

Dude I'm not even in high school

I figured...just gave ya a little benefit of the doubt.......stick around little buddy, you will learn more here than from Archies........you have a bit to see about them

I would love to have had the opportunity to become an archeologist. They certainly have contributed to the study of history. However, like much of academia, they tend to condescend to "amateurs" and come off as rather arrogant, assuming "training" trumps "experience". That's not always the case, perhaps more often than not, it's not the case. There are a number of fine Civil War historians who never completed a history degree in college - Bruce Catton and Shelby Foote for example - yet are regarded as superb historians. Moreover, the great majority of historical work in recovering, identifying, and documenting CW relics and artifacts has been done by metal detectorists/relic hunters - "amateurs". It's simply an indisputable fact. This might also be of interest:

Quote
Peter George
In 1992, State Archaeologist held a "public review meeting" for a new Va. State Regulation which would curtail the use of metal detectors even on private property. In 1993 author attended that hearing with some powerful evidence against approval of the regulation. He brought a 3-foot high stack of Civil War relic reference books, such as this one. Only a single volume in that stack of publicly available books was produced by Professional Archaeologists. He asked: If private citizens anywhere in this country became interested in the stories told by buried relics of the war, where can they turn for the desired information? The answer: To the rest of the books in the stack; all written, funded, and printed by relic hunters and collectors. This book and those others fill in for what State's paid Professionals are NOT DOING with the 1860's artifact that they claim need legal protection from "looters". To this very day, almost no construction is halted because 1860's relics would be destroyed, but good people who take metal detectors into Wood and Field get called "thieves and looters" in the Press. Yet those slandered people have provided the greater portion of Civil War relic knowledge. Thus they have earned a place in this book's Dedication. At the hearing's end Professionals said they "got the message". The regulation was not approved.

Excellent! You have the benefit of learning a lot of good stuff here. Just remain open-minded about these things. The more you learn, the more you'll realize you don't know. I'm 54 and learn a lot every day.

....not just CW experts Stonewall.....there are Joe Blow citizens out there that would blow the sox off many Archies.......archies are some of the biggest hypocrites there is too

Arrogance is a blinding vice.

The day you stop learning you might as well die. I've taught professionals stuff and they've taught me way more. All the archeologists I know are super nice and will agree experience trumps training every time.

Archeologists are Grave robbers, with a slip of white paper. I would'nt tell one of them, were there's a Birds nest.

You know, I've always been puzzled about that. How can they possibly criticize what we do when they have no scruples about grave digging? I understand the historical aspect, but it's still a bit odd.

I don't have a problem with it when it has to be done, like a road or something going through a site, but the remains should be re-buried out of a sign of respect, not shoved into a box and placed in a back room of a Museum to be later pawed over.???

I may be young but that's what I've told everyone for years.

I may respect archeologists but I know several secret mounds and burials I would never tell them about.
