Popped out to a site that has yielded a shield nickel and a cavalry button, been over it a hundred times before so didn’t expect much. the beans were harvested yesterday and we had a rain last night so I figured I’d kinda go relocate the spot and enjoy the fall weather. After a few targets I hit this guy, I was too curious to find out what it was to focus on looking more. Gives me strong motivation to get back out next time anyway.

I thought maybe it was a religious medal or even a lost dog tag but I’m almost sure it’s a 2 cent coin. The crust is really on there and I want to keep the green patina as best I can so I’ve got it soaking in olive oil right now. Unfortunately I think they put a hole right through the date.

Any tips of how to get more detail without destroying the coin are welcome

Also any experience with punctured coins? Why a person might wear money?

I have, that’s a good thread, lots of possibilities, question is if it was jewelry does that necessarily mean it was a woman’s or would men wear say a coin necklace?… also worth mentioning this area of Kansas was opened to settlement right about the time these coins began to be produced. Being a pioneer carving out a life in the middle of nowhere would you really waste money as jewelry? Maybe the no pockets theory is the way to go

Got it cleaned up, I’ll spare you purists the details but I’m glad it’s turning greenish again. The edges are surprisingly beat up and weird that some spots are totally rubbed off while some details are super sharp but I’m still very happy, it’s a huge clue to the age of the site and possibly my oldest coin to date, unfortunately just like the shield nickel the date is gone.

Edit:
Here’s without low angle and glare you lose some detail but a little more true to what it looks like
