This is from a small swivel cannon in cast iron. The coat of arms consists of a crown and shield. Inside the shie cannon2.jpgld is a row of dots right next to the inner shield outline and inside is an oval crest. I think it's Spanish. Any help would be appreciated.

It looks new and could explode if fired. HH Boris

Not going to even think of firing it. It is fully bored out and the touch hole does intersect the bore. Thanks.

Didn't think it was British. Don't think it's Dutch either. The coat of arms is a European type. I got it just because I liked it. I always wanted a "real" cannon but they are way too big and expensive for me.

No numbers anywhere. It's a signal cannon for a smaller boat/ship. Not sure of the age, but wasn't too expensive and I like it so I bought it.

Not a reproduction, but maybe something similar. Not sure. It sure is hard to reproduce something in cast iron. It melts at too high a temperature and if were a repro, with all the inquiries I have made somebody would have come up with a notation citing a bunch of these currently for sale. Repros made in brass would be more likely as there is a lower melting temperature. I have a friend who is one of the foremost 18th century militaria collectors in the US, and he thinks it's probably 18th century. Could also be a high end model for a larger gun (also quite old, but again where's the percentage in making it as a model?) They wouldn't have wasted the man hours on it. But it doesn't make sense they would totally bore out the thing and put a touch hole thru to the bore, therefore making it fireable. (No, not going to fire it, I collect antiques and other "fun" pieces of stuff I don't need.) I've wanted a "real" cannon for years, but they are too blasted expensive, and if you got it home, then what would you do with it? Besides mount it on my boat. Put it in place of the front swivel chair. That would work well until you ran into a Coast Guard boat or other marine police.....or a nuclear attack submarine which I shared the bay with last summer. It was just visiting, apparently.

There are many cast iron repros of cannons. There are many being made today. If yours is the one Taz found on ebay or like it, it is quite likely modern since the trunions are not properly proportioned to the tube on that one. If it is the one on ebay I sure hope you didn't pay near the four bills for it, little cannons aren't worth a whole lot, and the brass/bronze ones are usually more desirable.

It's real similar to that listing, but no I didn't pay anything near that for it. Thanks for the help. It's still a really neat piece, regardless of when it was made.

May we see other images of your cannon? I would like to see the hole piece and a close up of the back half with the touch hole area?I hope that isn't to much trouble? HH :icon_study:

I don't have any other pics right now but will have to take some more. Working overtime this week. At least I still have a job.

Just saying....I may be wrong but IMHO the subject gun and the one listed on Ebay and found by 'taz42o' have too many similarities to be different guns; even the webbing on the matting under the gun is similar. If true, I understand that proves nothing; the ID of the gun is still unknown.
