Detector(s) used
Tesoro Tejon, Tesoro Silver uMax, Tesoro Tiger Shark
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
I currently have a Tesoro Silver uMax. I like it and just got it and had success with some coins yesterday, which was the end of the season here because the ground just froze. My kids want to go detecting so they will use the uMax and I will get a new detector. I will be getting a Tesoro Tiger Shark for freshwater hunting and want a new Whites for land use. For land use I will just be hunting coins and jewelry. We don't have gold nuggets in Wisconsin so I don't need prospecting ability. I am also not interested in relic hunting. Just want to get clad, silver, and jewelry. I have not detected for 8 years and finshed back then with a Garrett GTAx 450. I want a TDI and think multi-tone would be good. I like the TDI just so I can compare target numbers with tones to better learn what the detector is hitting on. I would also like ground balance ability even though or soild has little to no mineralization. I chose Whites because I have read nothing but good about the durability and top notch customer service they provide. I am currently looking at the M6, MXT, and MXT Pro. Based on what I have just said what do think would fit my needs the best? Is the M6 all I need? I would also like the ability for the detector to go deep on coins so I can get all the good stuff the others went over. I am okay with having to get another coil to get more depth.

i can not comment on the machines that you have posted. i had an xlt then i bought the vx3. my silver count has gone way up with the vx3. i have also found a few dimes on edge around 6" deep with the vx3. good luck on your decision.

I think you'll do great with an M6 White's Metal Detectors - Matrix M6 for what you want to hunt, and it is a big step up on the learning and capability curve. It is also reasonably priced, unlike the overpriced TDI, which is a PI machine with not enough power, sort of a Minelab "Light." Good Luck, and Big Gold!

I was looking at Whites and also wondering if the Coinmaster GT is as capable as a M6 for $300 less. Any thoughts on this?

I own an MXT Pro and a VX3. The VX3 is my newest and I don't have much time on it yet but so far I REALLY like it! My MXTP is a great machine too. It can be a bit noisy but with an understanding of the controls and how they work it can be tamed pretty good. It's an excellent coin/jewelry machine and I hear it a decent nugget hunter as well.
I have no experience with the M6 but I hear great things about it as well. Mightbe slightly less deep than an MXT/P but they run pretty quiet. People that have em love em. If I hadn't got such a great deal on my MXTP, I probably would have bought one.
CMGT vs M6...I also have the CM Pro (not GT) so not a fair comparison but the I have looked at the GT and it's similar enough for what I'm gunna say about it. It feels cheap and wobbly. Kinda like a noodle. There is quite a bit of play between the shaft. It's really quite annoying on my CMP. The 2 GT's I picked up were the same way. If it were my money...M6. Tried & true proven performer! Or....There is a great deal (not mine) in the classified section on a VX3 for<$800. Buy that, you'll love it!

*edit* Dug up the classified ad. Looks like still has 15mo on the warranty too!

Out of the ones you listed I would get the MXTpro if you want a multitone machine or if you don't need that just get a MXT, the threshold detectors will give you a little edge in the depth department. I would get a whites D2 coil for depth though, the MXT is a whole new detector with the D2 coil. I can get dimes at 10"+ with my MXT and the D2 coil, I like to run at +2 gain for extra depth as any higher gain it gets to noisy to hear those deep faint signals. I can go to parks most don't even bother anymore as only the really deep silver is left, I run the discriminate at 6 with +2 gain and listen for the faint deep targets to bypass most clad and trash. Two completely different machines, and the M6 is at least 2" deeper.

Having had an MXT, MXT Pro and the M6, my vote is the M6. You said you were after coins and Jewelry and NOT relics or prospecting so the M6 fits the bill. The M6 is a step above the GT and it has everything you're looking for. You can pick up an almost new M6 off the big auction site for about $425. The MXT is noisier and has features you don't need and it doesn't have the tone ID like the M6. For that you'd have to step up to the MXT Pro and now you're looking at about $625 used.

There isn't a tooth fairy...no detector that is $300 less money is going to be as capable. More advanced circuitry costs more money. Does that mean you'll find more with the more expensive unit...not necessarily...it depends on your soil, and other factors.

Will the m6 equal the mxt pro in depth? I am willing to pay more to get a fully capable detector the first time around, but if the M6 has the depth it would suite my needs just fine. From everyone's advice I will drop the coinmaster GT from list. I think Jim in Idaho summed that one up pretty good! I have not owned a Whites but have read nothing but good about the MXT, MXT Pro, and M6. From what I understand though, the MXT does not have multiple tones. I don't know that would really be a deal buster.

With the MXT/P being threshold detectors they will be a bit deeper. How much?...Dunno. I will tell you though the MXT Pro is a one mean machine. Deep, fast, accurate, great on batteries, easy to use. Love mine! Can be a bit noisy but locking the GB (once balanced) and keeping the sens off +3 seems to help a lot!

If you can, get a used XLT, I have had mine for 9 years and have dug some awesome stuff

those are all over a 1000 bucks, you can pick up a used XLT for 350, and have fun, save your clad and buy a new one in a few years

The MXT will be a little deeper than the M6, if you need multi tones then go for the MXTpro. HH

I'll bet that the MXT is not more than 1/2" deeper than the M6. The M6 is quite a bite queiter. The M6 is a Silent search detector while the MXT is a threshold based detector. The M6 is threshold based while in the all metal mode (Pinpoint with trigger pulled back). The M6 Threshold can be adjusted after accessing the trimmer pot inside the control box.

On the minelab suggestion..... Not American made, and I have read nothing good about their slow customer service. I am not saying it is a bad detector. I am sure they are awesome, but Whites are America made and they have excellent customer service. Those two items are key selling points to me. I love the price on the M6, but because I want max depth to get all the goodies the Bounty Hunters left behind I think I am going to bite the bullet and get a used MXT Pro. I may reconsider and get a M6 because I still need to get a Tesoro Tiger Shark for freshwater hunting.
