Hello everyone!

I am in the market to purchase a new detector. I have previously owned both a White's XLT and then a DFX which were sold a few years ago due to unforseen circumstances.

I have been missing this hobby ever since and am ready jump back in ;D

My question to you all is with a budget of $700 or so, what detector has the most bang for the buck. Im not interested in a beach/surf or gold detector. Just an all around coin shooting machine.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

What kinds of coins are you looking to find? New coins at the playground or older, deeper coins? If you want old, deep coins, then buy a used Minelab Explorer XS off of eBay for around $500 or so and then buy a sunray probe for it for about another $200.

If you are just looking for clad coins, then basically any newer machine will do and you don't need to spend $700 for that.

I'd say the biggest bang for $700 would be the Tesoro Tejon ($559.20 lifetime warranty ). It's light, easy to use, and super deep. I use the DeLeon which isn't as deep as the Tejon and I get amazing depth. If you buy a Tejon, get a long-handled trowel (no, I'm not kidding). This detector should only be purchased by those who are serious about treasure hunting.

For even less money you can get an even deeper machine but it's rather heavy and has a bigger learning time (but easier to learn than the Explorer II). This would be the Nautilus DMC IIB ($536). The "Nauty" is another no-nonsense machine for those who have grown out of the gismo toy stage. You will rarely find anyone who will put this detector down. It's extremely difficult to find one of these for sale in used condition. It happens but not often. People who buy these usually keep them because it's a depth champion and smooth as silk. Coin/CW Button reports of 10-14 inches are common with the DMC IIB. In fact, it will be my very next machine.

Hope this helps!

I use a Whites XLT myself and am pleased with it's performance. As general, all round detector to satisfy a hobbiest, I think it is a good choice, myself. I am not as seriously into the detecting as some are so I don't know about a lot of other machines. Is there some reason you want to replace your equipment with something different? I did look at a Whites Prizm IV, (around $400) as a backup or second machine and was impressed with it also. There is a Prizm V that would be a little more machine for your money also. The Prizms might be more basic, simple and less than you are looking for though. But as a value for their money, I could really see getting one for myself.

I would, personally consider another XLT. Mine has never done me wrong. Not that I know of anyway. Unless there is something more specific that you want. It might run you a little more than your stated budget though as I think they are a little closer to $800. Who knows though what a good dealer will give you. I think going up to a DFX might be a little harder on the wallet if you are only planning on $700.

In any case, I am sure you will find your answers from the folks here. Good Luck and welcome back.

Thanks for all the reply's ;D ;D

Please keep em comin!

As long as you are not trying to get deep coins in heavily hunted parks and you have "good" soil conditions... I like the Whites detectors. Something like the IDX pro would be a good choice - should be able to get one on ebay. The Minelabs are good but are a little different than the Whites(especially when you get to the Quattro/Explorer).

my 2 cents, is look at the whites m-6...retails about 700.....bought 1 for my son it's very easy to use. and I use an xlt but that is more money unless you find a used ne or a demo model a dealer is willing to give you a deal on.
