Neatest Find To Date: Another Update

Hey All!
I went out in the woods behind my house today(the same spot I've been finding mostly nails since I started detecting) and I found a bunch a stuff including more nails but today I also found a brass plate. ;D I didn't know what it was until I got in the house and cleaned it a little. I still have a couple of small things soaking in some evapo rust and will add pics of that stuff later.
Here is the brass plate. It may not be much to anyone else but I'm still happy about it. I hope that I can use this to help date the site as there are no structures.
It measures 2 3/4" X 5 1/4" and it's brass with copper rivets.

I will update it with a cleaner picture a soon as it gets cleaner.

Here's one of the other items I found. I think it has something to do with logging. It's about a foot and a half in length. This is the same site I have found all of those replaceable sawblade teeth.

Any info on these items will be greatly appreciated.

Well anyway, the brass plate to me is the neatest thing I've found so far. I hope everyone is having a great week.
Happy Hunting,
Ed

Re: Neatest Find To Date

I can't remeber the name, but thats just what that tool is for- logging. My Grandad had one. Maybe its called a Peavy?

Anyways, a long pole maybe 6 feet or so with a metal spike tip went through the ring on it. You "stabbed" the log with the tip of the pole, and that sidearm attachment would go around it and grab, making it pretty easy to roll.

Re: Neatest Find To Date

I really like that brass plate. The peavy is real nice too. Someone who knows more than me will have to tell you for sure, but I think that brass plate has real value to a collector of steam engines. Nice finds!

Re: Neatest Find To Date

We called 'em "cant hooks" and they are used for rolling logs...d2

Re: Neatest Find To Date

Cool finds, that plate has some history.

If you really found a 1964 wheat it's worth millions (sorry I couldn't resist ;D)

Nice job,
Nat

Ahh!! :o You're right! I meant 1946. ::) I must had a moment of dyslexia. It's also my oldest coin to date found with a metal detector.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'll go and change it.

The older copper pennies hold up much better the the zinc pennies (post 1982). So if your finding newer pennies even if they were only in the ground for a short period of thime they will usually be in much worst shape.

PS I love the brass plate. Anything you can research is a nice find in my book.

Re: Neatest Find To Date

I think that plate may be from an old "donkey engine". They were used to move fallen trees up hillsides thru a series or cables and pulleys. They were extremely dangerous to work around and it was said that you could tell how long a man had worked the donkey engine by how many fingers and toes he didn't have.

Re: Neatest Find To Date

Nice plate! Those are worth a fair amount to collectors! It is most likely as was mentioned from a "Steam Donkey" The peavey would kind of confirm a logging use. The company is still in business by the way, and they could probably help you date it more precisely and tell you exactly what it was on. here's their link: http://www.morrispumps.com/mp_history.htm

Re: Neatest Find To Date: Updated Pic

Thanks everyone for the comments. I emailed Morris Pumps last night and asked them if they could give me any info. but still haven't received a response. I have cleaned it up some but it was caked in dirt and what appears to be grease. It still has a lot of the old grease build up on it but I'm trying not to get to happy with the wire brush. I went back out today and found a lot more nails, a file, and what appears to be a small wedge. I'll be adding those pics soon but they're soaking right now.

Thanks again and happy hunting,
Ed

Re: Neatest Find To Date: Another Update

Here's all the stuff I found today and yesterday. Other than the peavy and the brass plate, the other thing I like most was the little wedge in the 2nd picture. In the first picture on the bottom left I thought I had found a old padlock but as you can see in the 2nd picture it's some type of ring with a mounting bracket of some sort. It kind of looks like a little door knocker. Also in the first picture on the bottom right was what I thought to be buttons but after cleaning them it turned out they were washers. I have no idea what the metallic looking things are in the 2nd picture. A magnet does stick to them and when I found them they were covered in rust. They have been soaking in evapo rust for about 16 hours. Anyway thanks for all the info and comments and thinks for reading my post.

In reference to the peavy, would that count as a relic? ???

Happy Hunting to all.
