Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum but I've been detecting off and on about 20 years.

I'm hoping someone can help ID this. It's almost as heavy as lead but much harder. It shows up on the explorer xs about three or four digits left of a dime. Is there a test to see of it's silver?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer, Okie

Silver wouldn't be rusty as that looks to be, silver will turn black, but I've never seen silver with that type of corrosion, a jeweler can test it for you.

Check it with a magnet to see if it's iron or steel.

I know there're some tests you can do at home to determine if it's silver, I will let other more knowledgeable on this test to post a How-to.

Thanks, good questions.

It's not magnetic at all and I took a couple pics after taking a toothbrush to it. The smooth side has a grain to it that looks almost organic. I took a very bad picture of it through a microscope to show the grain.

Sometimes u might get lucky and find a meteorite that actually made it to earth. I know it's a far shot, but it's worth looking into.

A meteorite is an interesting thought. One can only hope. I found a meteorite as a kid with a cheapy radio hack special detector but I didn't learn what it was until years after it was lost. I've got a bunch of hours in trying to find it again.

I'm no expert at all but I think that the majority of meteorites out there are definitely magnetic. Do you have a stronger magnet that you can try? I think meteorite hunters use very strong rare earth magnets since some meteorites only have a small amount of iron in them. Either way it looks pretty cool. HH

Silver can take on a rust cover, if it's been in the ground were heavy iron consentrates are present.
