On the lid above the cross the word REPOSE appears. Above that is a circle with the letters, CR in the circle. It is not magnetic. In the foot of the coffin is a spring loaded plunger with a hole in the center that exposes a sharp spike when depressed. There is no access to the spike and plunger from the inside of the coffin body. I don't believe it is a snuff box, vesta case, reliquary, or cigar tool. The best suggestion so far was that it might have been used to make sure you are dead before burial. That fits the death theme. The spike could be used to get a reaction by pricking a finger tip and the coffin might have contained something similar to smelling salts. But that was just a best guess. It was kept/found with items from the Civil War era.
