Found a shield nickel yesterday. I cleaned gently it with a wet toothpick. I still can’t make out the date and I don’t want to alter it too much. Is there any chance I can tease a date out with naval jelly or something? Also I’m no coin expert but I read they didn’t produce many after 187-something until 1883 is it safe to assume it’s likely before that or are those dates not as rare as it sounds? I’m on a very new site and I’m trying to narrow the date on it.

Yeah I’m happy with it to that point now it’s going to be nice and safe behind glass.

Hello, thats a nice find. This summer I also dug my oldest coin, an 1867 shield nickel. Totally unexpected find when i dug it...from a small town around Omaha. Could not pull a good date from it til I used an Andres pencil on it. Literally wipes away the crud. Had to reply to your post, its similar to my experience. Also, cant really detect around Omaha for the next few months. Is it warm enough in SE Kansas to detect in January ? good post !
