I'm a newby to detecting. I picked up an Ace 350 Garrett from one of the sponsors of this site about a month ago. Nice machine. Anyway, tonight I was in "Relic" mode on the machine and hit a spot that was distinct for the coin/silver response. I dug down over 8", which is where the machine told me that the item was, only to find a hunk of iron, perhaps part of a rusting old plow share. Shouldn't this have been kicked out in the Fe response on my machine, a "boop" instead of the "beep"?? I am a greenhorn, so sorry if my question is weak. Thanks for any responses.

Hmmm did you talk to garrett and ask them why

The thing is that VLF machines do a great job of discriminating; however, they aren't infallible. Ask anyone how many times they got a nice dime ping deep to find a pop top, or a fantastic 90+ deep only to find a hatchet. Things like this happen, and as you get to know (be at one with) your machine the better you'll be able to discern what it's telling you.

If you don't get the answer you are looking for - you might also consider browsing SubForum: Garrett or even bounce your question of the Vendor...

Steve is right. I find iron laying flat gives the vlf machines fits. But they do a great job most of the time, it's called metal detecting not picking up treasure. GL

My 350 always hits a good signal on big iron. There's really nothing to be done about it. A while back I got a great hit in a park that turned out to be about 4 feet of railroad track a foot and a half down..... :BangHead: It's still in the ground there......

Dusty sure does hate a Garrett doesn't he! And doesn't care who knows it!!LMAO!!! But these guys are right buddy my at pro sees big iron as good signals and sometimes confuses deep targets! Now my etrac doesn't do this but we are talkin a 1100 price difference! Garrett makes a great machine and as far as the AT Pro goes there's not another machine out there at that price that even almost holds a flame to it!!!

My dad never owned a Ford, but he could tell you everything that was wrong with em

I have an AT Gold and it gives me high numbers in gold range for some targets including coke cans, buried iron objects, copper wires, pipes, etc. When I get a hit, I try to scan it with detector to see how big the object is. The iron often gives high freq. readings generally center mass of the target with iron audio noise at outer edges. I am still a greenhorn and learning my machine so I am sure I have passed up some coins and jewelry mixed with iron in the ground. When I decide not to dig, I ask myself ok how do you know that isnt a buried strong box with treasure in it? if I get lots of signals like that, I don' dig, but a lone target I do dig. I had a hit the other day that disappeared and I concluded was rust in the soil that scattered when I dug it and broke the soil looking for a coin. I have been hunting a lot of trashy sites but am going to start going to places where a lot of people have congregated for a long time.

I believe that the issue is that big Iron will give almost any machine a "good target" response. Things to take into account are. How big is the signal? How long has it been burried?

Iron produces a halo after being buried that has coin properties. That is why you can get a decent signal and after the first shovel the signal goes way down and you are convinced there is a coin in there based on the first signal. Yes high end machines are better on the rejection side. Personally I run with very little rejection when hunting old areas.

Wait till this poor guy takes his garrett to the city park for the first time and finds out its a bottle cap magnet you can try turning your machine down abit and it gets alittle closer to something people call stable but it will still fasle and ding ding ding each swing

Dont pay any attention to dusty the Garrett Hater. Mine is the same, just the nature of the beast.
I spend atleast 30 hours a week detecting with a garrett ace 350 so lets just call a spade a spade..

Not to go off topic but...

had to put that in my sig,,,made me LOL

And yes even my Garrett At Pro has fooled me from time to time...but I'm getting better and have started using the Pro mode where small tone shifts at the beginning and end of the sweep will tell you if its junk that's why I still dig "everything" but I now can defiantly rule out pennies now

I'm a GarrettHead and couldn't think of a better machine for the money, and I own a Minelab 4500!

YEP! You get what you pay for, and in the AT you get what you pay for + 50% more. The ETrac is an awesome machine (I want one), but let's face it... it's $1600 and whole bunch more complex. For a newb (and many pros) Garrett makes the best detectors, for the money, hands down.

Dude, most of my digging is done in parks, and I filled a 1 litre gatorade bottle with coins from a small parkette (less than 2 acres). If you are only digging bottle caps, you don't know what your machine is telling you. IE... discrimination is set too low, sensitivity too high, custom settings are off...etc. If you have it set to fire on EVERYTHING, then you're gonna dig EVERYTHING!

my uncle has a ace 2 fiddy you can't fix stupid but he found over 500 pounds of crusher copper an a bout 200.00 in coins but that's it
no deep silver coins
no deep big float copper
no Indian artifacts
if he doesn't turn down to two bars
he's digging nothen all the time
you can have your ace series...blunt tip give me a break
not in press with Texas instruments
or any first Texas instruments..or any company who branched out from them....
