My first Saloon Token

Got out and hit a few places today. The first stop coughed up a little sterling ring, toward the end of the day we ran across some guys emptying an old shed next to an old house that was about to fall in. We asked and got permission to hunt the yard. There I found this old saloon token and the old sugar spoon. Afterward we stopped at the church down the road where we were previously headed and I found a buckle cover and the wheat penny.





Feel free to tell me it's super rare and valuable.

Nice token! There is a variety listed on tokencatalog from Andrews & Bray, Delmonicos Saloon, Greenville, Texas, but this one is not posted there yet. Please post it there, or with permission to use your photos, I can do it. Yes it is rare, and if you were to sell it at auction with token collectors bidding, I am sure you would be happy with the results.

This morning I got another email from the experts at tokencatalog.com They are still looking into who would have made the token, (his guess was Fort Worth) and how old it is. Currently it's believed to be the only one like it, and is estimated to be worth a few hundred dollars to a collector. I have it sitting in olive oil and will be putting it into a coin holder for safe keeping very soon.

As for value, I think its worth a LOT more to collectors. I know that in our Oklahoma token book, rare (several examples known) can easily bring $500 - $700. Being the only example known, may go as high as $1000.

The key is to find out who the top collectors are. They know who their competition is and don't want to see a one of a kind go to another guy.

I was thinking that version was later based on the fact that it has become fancier and the drink prices have gone up. Very early store tokens were typically straight-forward, simple and often cruder than later varieties. But thats just my opinion.

Just take a look at the completed listings for saloon tokens on ebay. Some of them are worth as much as gold.

Yeah bud, I just checked out the saloon tokens on eBay. Yeah there's SOME selling for a lot, but as I mentioned before: the majority sell for a few bucks. You asked what the value could possibly be, and I stated what I did. However, of course there are always those rare pieces that some random collector might want and will pay a little more for. Hell, there's people selling their toenail clippings and bread slices that "look like Jesus" for thousands of dollars. To most, it ain't worth 15 dead flies. To a few it might be worth a little more. I hope you get some collector to throw you some fatty stacks of cash bro! Hey, on TreasureNet someone might find proof that belonged to Billy the Kid or Yosemite Sam and you'll get millions for it! The facts people find on this site scare me! It's amazing...good luck and nice find! Tokens are always fun to dig

I sent pics to a couple of experts. One said it's worth a few hundred dollars, the other just straight up offered me $150. So I think it's better than toe nail clippings but thanks for your comparison.

I love my saloon token a New Orleans token from the French Quarter on Royal St off Bourbon St. I found it in the grass of the oldest church in Covington, which is across Lake Ponchatrain from New Orleans. I just know they had to be a story there. Lol

(New Orleans, Louisiana), Ziegler Saloon, 106 – 114 Royal St., E.W. Peters, Prop. // 10. Copper nickel, 27mm, vf detail with some corrosion on both sides, Crawford & Farber 6293Z/3-10a, R-10.
The catalog states that all the known Z/3-10 examples have a V counterstamp on the obverse – this one does not. The Ziegler Saloon operated at 8-12 Royal Street from 1875 – 1895 when it became Huff’s Saloon. Street numbers were changed in New Orleans in 1894 so this token was struck in 1894 or 1895. A rare New Orleans saloon token.

You have inspired me now! I found a saloon token in Pueblo, Colorado a few years ago. John Sweeneys "Dewey Saloon" and I listed it last week in the token catalog online. Great find and great auction price!

I have been hunting for almost 50 years,and have quite a number of those old saloon good for 5 cents tokens they were very popular items around Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky where I hunted.
