🥇 BANNER My first gold coin and its a $10 Indian !!!!

Finally got out today with my son and was not expecting a 1915 $10 gold Indian. We had been hunting for about 1 1/2 hrs. and my son was in the truck taking a break and I moved to a spot on the back side of the church and started finding 3 back to back wheat pennies. Than a old great seal button than the gold hit. I didn't know it was a gold coin and thought it was a piece of trash in the side of the hole so I used my digger to pop it out and scratched the obverse.(rooky mistake) Lesson learned to go easy on all good solid targets no matter what they read. I was so excited I ran for the truck to show my son and realized I was dragging my pinpointer the entire way. I should have slowed down and videoed the find but we just never find stuff like that. My son got back out swinging but didn't find much but a US screw back button and a few bullet casings. This is one hunt I will never forget.

You found a $10 Indian out behind a church? Uh, I'm sure that was destined for the collection plate. What the minister failed to tell you was that there was a speakeasy & gambling parlor in the church basement in the 1920s.

The VDI on the AT Gold was solid 76 and it was down 5-6 inches.

If everyone on here, including myself, were told that a $10 gold coin was gonna be dug, but a diggy tool scratch would come with it.... We would sign up for that, no doubt!

I also nominated BANNER. Very first one I did, mainly because I really never researched how until today. I would call it an excellent find in SS condition. (Slightly Scratched)
If it was a deeper scratch it would be in AG condition. (About Gouged)

Again congrats on a wonderful once in a lifetime find. (Even though mine was older and more rare!)

Holy Cow what an awesome find. It would have been very hard to peel me away from that place because I'd have been thinking there just had to be hundreds more waiting to be found. That was a lot of money back then, whoever lost it was surely very upset. Congrats!!!

congrats on a big piece of gold! did the scratch hurt value? Probably a little, but no matter what it'll always be worth its weight in gold! Right now it's $660.51 according to coinflation

That's a phenomenal find. Don't beat yourself up over the scratch. Usually these coins are worth just about the same numismatically as they are in raw gold weight. Haven't looked that one up yet but I hope that's the case. Congrats on the gold coin.
