that is one cool ring,it may have been a commission ring for the captain of the ship
or maybe an officer of the ship ,great find, hope you get the complete story to it.

thanx's Mark

Dang Rusty, you and Tracy are tearing it up ! That is an awesome find and one you know you will never find another! Good luck getting to the bottom of the history on that ring and hopefully I will be seeing you at N/S if I make the alt cut :)

:o OMG! What a find! Congrats! :o
As far as the face... I see the caracter from the scary movie spoof...
As Adam Sandler would say... "you can put your weed in there" :P

Maybe it is the Sultana...a ship that exploded late in the civil war with many casualties, possibly moe than the Titanic

Great ring Rusty!!!......That's unbelievable!!!

I don't know if this will help but I know it's worked great for me taking real close-up pictures. If you have access to a microscope, preferably with a light on it, zoom in with the microscope to see the fine details. Then hold a digital camera lense up to the eye piece of the microscope, focus and take a picture. The picture is exactly what you see in the microscope. I have access to a microscope at work and can see and take pictures of unbelievable detail on things.

I hope to read about this in W&E Treasures.

Same here! That is a truly remarkable ring and definitely deserves a spot in their next Best Finds issue.

That is one sweeeet ring!!I have some pics of some old side wheel steamers I'll see what I can find .Congrats! Bootstrap

Update: I think Goldencoin may be right.I have a box of old picture cards like you saw in grade-school and they have pics of alot of old side wheel steamers and the story of the ship on the back. If you read the story it is pretty tragic so it seems only fitting that someone may have wanted to commemorate such a major loss of life.Maybe they had a loved one aboard.Once again thats a sweeet ring and Congrats, Sorry but the cards are in black and white.I don't know it has three decks and you can't see the wheel in this pic, you be the judge. Wow, nice find

You may be able to get some info from this site:

http://www.steamboats.com/museum/index.html

They seem to have quite the group of helpers and experts.

Also, I am wondering if the face in the ring is not the result of a tintypes chemicals, and shows a distorted image of the original picture the ring held

Anyhow - excellent find Congrats

I absolutely could not imagine what kind of happy dance you did when you found that ring! :o Heck, I'd still be dancin! :D What a find! Congratulations, Rusty and thanks for sharing your find!

Nana :)

Congrats!! That is by far... the most awesome find I have seen in ages. You have a once in a lifetime treasure there. I commend you on all your efforts to find the origin and meaning of this piece. This is what our hobby is all about. In time you will be open up a new page of history for all of us to learn from. Keep up the great work and a big huge CONGRATS!
