My Big Day at Site A

Site A is the original location of Argonne National Laboratory, during WWII. The world's first nuclear reactor built under the Stagg Field stands (a graphite moderated reactor) is buried there, CP1 which was renamed CP2 when moved to the site. Also buried there is CP3, the world's first lead shielded reactor. Oddly enough, both were just buried in a big pit in the ground on the site. A seperate location nearby, Plot M is where all the low level waste was buried. In the '90's, Bechtel Corp. was tasked with cleaning up the mess, as groundwater was being polluted with radiation, and a hockey puck sized piece of U238 ( I believe) was found 'just laying about'. Went out there today with the DFX, my second day out. Found some clad, and some good stuff, too. Two Merc. dimes (1916, 1936) and a silver quarter (1906), all in the same hole. What is really strange is that I found a Chuck E. Cheese 2003 token not 5 feet away! This can be a strange hobby at times! Going back, that's for sure! Want to get some U of C Met. Lab instrument plates like Sherm found.

Re: My Big Day at Site A

Congratulations great finds. That Merc didn't happen to have a D mint on the back eh? LoL you always got to tell us if yes or not on the 1916 Merc.

Great finds all the way. Looks like a great spot just hope your not getting radiated in any way.

T,

I'm a bit under the weather with a set of
bad ribs, but would have liked to get out
there and meet you on the site. Perhaps
some times this winter. That is a very
interesting site.

Very nice finds, silver always is.

Sounds like you and that new DFX are getting
along well.

Again, nice finds.

have a good un...............

Re: My Big Day at Site A

I know what you mean about glowing. I grew up in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. A little bit of radiation around there also. :) When I tell people where I'm from, the want to know if I glow at night. :)

Re: My Big Day at Site A

Darn! Both dimes have 'W' mint marks. Still excited for my second day out. If you want more info, Google "Site A" and "Plot M". I have photos of the reactors in the buildings on site, taken from various websites. No rad. badges are needed as long as you keep clear of the seep at the foot of 'Plot M', supposedly the source of most of the Tritium and other nasties found in the ground water. Been cross country skiing and mountain biking there for 30 years. Diamond Willow hiking staff has the 5.3 coil on it!

Actually, the W is the designer's initials. The mint mark is on the reverse... on the bottom left, underneath the branch.
