My Big Day at Site A

Site A is the original location of Argonne National Laboratory, during WWII. The world's first nuclear reactor built under the Stagg Field stands (a graphite moderated reactor) is buried there, CP1 which was renamed CP2 when moved to the site. Also buried there is CP3, the world's first lead shielded reactor. Oddly enough, both were just buried in a big pit in the ground on the site. A seperate location nearby, Plot M is where all the low level waste was buried. In the '90's, Bechtel Corp. was tasked with cleaning up the mess, as groundwater was being polluted with radiation, and a hockey puck sized piece of U238 ( I believe) was found 'just laying about'. Went out there today with the DFX, my second day out. Found some clad, and some good stuff, too. Two Merc. dimes (1916, 1936) and a silver quarter (1906), all in the same hole. What is really strange is that I found a Chuck E. Cheese 2003 token not 5 feet away! This can be a strange hobby at times! Going back, that's for sure! Want to get some U of C Met. Lab instrument plates like Sherm found.

Darn! Both dimes have 'W' mint marks.

Actually, the W is the designer's initials. The mint mark is on the reverse... on the bottom left, underneath the branch.

yup desecrator is right. look on the back. it would be awesome if its a "d". ;)

Re: My Big Day at Site A

Nice Merc!!!

Look on the reverse for the "D" just to the right of "ONE"...

A 1916 "D" in that shape could get close to $325.00..

On the Merc - nada, no mark at all! Shouldn't there be something there? The 1937 is a "D", though. Don't much care what they are worth, just the finding was worth more than anything one would be willing to pay! Going back again next week.

Hey great finds and neat report on the area your hunting. Here in Ohio we have a lake called St. Mary's lake. Us guys who water hunt it like to say that we glow for three days after we get out of that lake, it is really green!

Thanks for your post, HH, Ringfinder
