I found this mummified or petrified skull in dirt dredged from a ditch in central Indiana. It is solid rock. It is about the size of a half dollar coin. You can see the eye sockets, nasal cavity, and teeth on one side. the teeth have turned to crystal. Do you know what this is or the age of it? Any questions?

Odd indeed. It seems odd, or extremely coincidental that circumstances would occurr in nature to produce that look of a skull without the use of an actual skull. On the other hand, it does look like it's probably a conglomeration that just looks like a skull. I think the eye socket shown in the first pic even has the impression of some sort of snail or clam shell in it? That and the possible cephalopod teeth would indicate seabed conglomerate.

If it is a piece formed of a skull, I would think otter or some close relative as mentioned earlier.

It's hard to look at that thing and not "assign" characteristics we commonly associate with "skulls" because it looks so much like one. After seeing the rest of it we probebly all can say it's not a skull.

Truthfully... it's prolly a rock!

My advise is the same as the recent "Mardi Gras Mask" question... either have it professionally evaluated or throw it in the garden (right-side up of course!) ;)

If you're going to find a match for tha skull, it'll be here:

"The Digital Morphology library is a dynamic archive of information on digital morphology and high-resolution X-ray computed tomography of biological specimens. Browse through the site and see spectacular imagery and animations and details on the morphology of many representatives of the Earth's biota."

I was thinking Horned Toad at first, but maybe not...VERY interesting...good luck!

Look at the rock for other fossils. It looks like you may have some more fossils in it-perhaps some more small straight cephalopods. Also put some HCL on it to establish it is limestone- muriatic acid to see if it fizzles.

By the way it already has been professionally evaluated.

Besides what looks like eye sockets and a nasal opening....is there anything that looks like a basilar opening....somewhere for the neck to attach?

Don't feel bad. Humans are a social species and we're "hard-wired" to read facial expresions of others. We tend to see faces in rocks, potatoes, shadows, trees, the moon, etc., etc.

Looks like a crinoid stem or arm for the teeth and possibly a cast of a brachiopod shell for the eye. Second "nasal" cavity between could be the hole where another stem or a borrow was. Litter & tracks from the sea floor.

I think the eye socket is really a seashell fossil (notice the lines radiating from top to bottom. As for the teeth, could be fossilized coral. Just my 2 cents worth 8)

Yes I do believe it is a skull as well. You can clearly see the external occipital protuberance at the base of the posterior base of the skull. As well as the nasal cavitiy, and sockets. Rocks do not form like this on their own.

Just one quick thing: Just because the right side has no features and looks like a rock does not mean it is a rock...Depending on where it was, the minerals an such in the ground probably fused to the side of the skull turned down toward the earth. This would explain the odd appearance of the right side of the skull.
