Mountain Men Rendezvous Sites

Montana Jim....That Crazy Woman Mountains story has always been one of my very favorites....go figure....I hope to hunt there soon....my sister lives in Bozeman and is lining some places up for me....

Gyspy... yes, you have told me your going to hunt when you get to Bozeman. I think thats awesome...

If you Google the Crazy Women Mountains Montana you will find that there are legends and different beliefs as to "why" they got the name... but basically the crazy lady theme runs with all of them. It's all pretty interesting.

If you've never been to Montana... have fun!

Don't forget the Local Rendezvous Site(s) one is in Eastern Arizona.
'Bout 50 miles north of the Junction of the San Francisco and the Blue Rivers!
For Arizona & NMexico Mntmen!

The last (?) "grizzle", in this part of the west, was killed Here!
I think that it was killed by a mntman, name of "Ben Lilly" ?

Great info, thank you so much Gypsyheart.

TreasureTales, Jeremiah Johnson was said to eat the liver of his enemies, although it could just have been an exageration. Anyways, I have done some research into mountain men and one of those most famous ones is Jeremiah Johnson.

Did you know that he was the first American to use kicks, "similar" to martial arts, in his attacks? It is said that he had killed men with his powerful kicks. He didn't always kick high, but he would do so if the occasion required it. He would normally kick in the stomach or chest, and his kicks were so powerful that he would lift men 2 feet off the ground with a kick.

Gypsy,

This has been one of the most informative posts I have followed.
You really did some serious research here, ever think about a book?

Might be fun

and prifitable.

I was a kid in Livingston and Bozeman.
let us know what you find there

Afternoon

You are so right Old Dog. Gypsy is multi-talented and I am certain could write a great book. I would love to check out some of those places. No telling what goodies could be found.

One question. Wouldn't these places be considered as "historical sites"? I would hope not, but you never know.

Some might be but as far as I know unless they are privately owned, most are not protected.
I have many books that talk about these sites and I try to find corresponding websites once I get on the trail of something. The information is all out there, I just enjoy tracking things down and making it easier on those of you who can go hunt these areas. I hope the info that I try and get out there works for you.

Louis,

We have a site here where the Mountain Men would gather. Just at the base of the Grand Mesa. Easy to get to and on BLM land.
I can give you as much info on it as you want.
We have local Mountainman asociations that still gather there once in a while.

They do some looking and it dosn't bother anyone if you do too.

Gypsyheart, that information was amazing, well researched, and it is very kind of you to actually do something like this. Thanks a lot. :)

I live in the Wyoming area, and might get to some of those sites and see what I find. If I find anything I will post it.

OD, maybe sometime in the future i will go to explore Colorado. Thanks for the info and the offer. i will take it up someday, but for now I am sticking to Wyoming, unless i get a very good lead in Colorado.

Gypsyheart, if your coordinates are right for the 1829 – Lander, Wyoming rendezvous, it means the site was right beside 789, by a rest stop according to what i see in Google Earth. Think people are going to call the police if they see someone close to the road swinging a rod they don't know what's for?.... :o :P

Thanks Gypsy.

I went to two of the rendezvous sites and took some pictures, although the 1929 Rendezvous site I didn't find. I will post the pictures and some info on those two sites in another thread.

Great Stuff Ms Gypsy,

Thanks this is good stuff ! It reminded me of having seen an article about an old trapper cache being located fairly recently where there were rifles that had been packed in axle grease and were well preserved. I hope that you will be the next one to find something like this. You will be seeing some nice country when you go to MT and WYO. If you are lucky you can also take home some nice gems.

There has been a few references to Pegleg Smith having met other mtnmen at rendezvous' in Taos New Mexico. It is also where he headed when he stole over 300 horses from the local's around LA.
