I mean who does not dream of digging up a cannon right? That is an amazing find. The pictures get better and better. Congratulations.

Yeah,,, agreed.

In fact I vote banner... BUT... only... WHEN complete pic can be taken ... Until then its just "parts of a cannon"... when you find that missing piece then it becomes "I found a cannon"

:P

So go find that other trunnion ! ! !

:)

When I get it all together you can be the first to fire it

By all means... after you... only fitting that the finder of such should have first try.

I have some super glue... gallon size... I will send it to ya.

No, no, you first, I insist--I loaded it myself! :laughing7:

What a great find! I agree that it definitely is worthy of a banner vote.

Don't use super glue...JB weld is much better on iron...looking forward to seeing it pieced back together!!

That is just over the top awesome to me. I saw a rifle barrel that was split from a plugged barrel once. I wonder how it happened. Did the crew double load, load a loaded cannon, how would you stick that barrel in the mud or what?
That was a violent “kaboom”
I bet the signal is a screaming Beep.

Excellent find. Looking forward to more as you find and post more.

Proceed with respect for possible victims, because with that many pieces of shrapnel flying at the time, you may find bones as well.

Wish I didn’t work today but I’m definitely going back later in the week,It took me a long log time to find the spot it all happened.

Wow great pictures and stories thats alot of work you been doing on that cant wait to see more very exciting thats a banner for sure

You only have half... so....... half banner :P

For the military experts here (and esp CannonballGuy who seems to know everything about these things :notworthy:):

1. There must be enough of it now to determine at least what era it is from. Do we have a ballpark figure on age?

2. Do we know the caliber? (pardon me if this is the wrong term for a cannon).

3. Is there a way to determine whether this was intentionally plugged and long fused or whether this was an accident?

4. If it was fired and exploded in anger and we have a ball park age, based on it's location in upstate NY, do we have a list of candidate battles in which it may have exploded?

Thanks for any insight. Very interesting thread for sure.

I have been reluctant to mention for several reasons... but I just gotta...

Anyone besides me see debri from 2 cannons ? ? ?

That last picture just screams it.

Howd I miss that first pic :/
