To all:

I went with my 11 years old son, Benjamin to our favorite site that consisted of a trash pit and old campsite of the US Army. I let him play hooky from school for the day as I had the day off. We had a great time together digging in the dirt. We started in the trash pit and then moved to a campsite after lunch.

Finds from MDing the campsite (top portion of the photo) produced 8 mine balls (same hole) a tin flask, some modern bullets and some brass junk with one artillery cuff button. Ben found the arrow head.

Bottom part of the photo, produced from around 12 wheel barrel loads and sifted over 6 hours from the trash pit.

From top to bottom and left in the attached photo.

4 Round balls with several small round balls (ball and buck loads) two lead buttons, one and a half wood buttons, two brass brads, brass scraps, a base ring from a plume atop a musician dress hat, 8 eagle buttons (1 large Infantry and 4 small Infantry, one rife cuff button, one brass tack, several bone and peril buttons, a horse head (from a chess piece), 3 iron buckles, a small pile of percussion caps, a hardy hat eagle pendant (hit it with the shovel), a piece of porcelain with a image on it, one ivory domino, an old lock, the sole to a boot, two pipes, and several scrap pieces of pipes. One of the pipe pieces (in green) has ?President Fillmore? written on the base. I have found similar whole pipes that have the president?s face on it.

President Fillmore 1853-1857, as I still believe the pit is before 1860.

We had a great day and made some memories. Now it is time to split the loot between us.

Thanks for reading and keep on digging.

SPWalker and Ben

Very nice finds you two! Sounds like ya'll had a great time together!

;)

I am sure your son got more out of relic hunting with you for the day ,than a week in school would have done him. Congrats on some very nice finds !

What a neat place to hunt! Great finds! Tsgman

nice stuff but

I think it is deplorable that you would allow your son to miss school. It is important to his future. Next time you are thinking of this again call me and Ill blow off work and go with you so I can be sure that you don't jeopardize his education again ;)

Nice stuff. I would have done it for all that stuff. It's fun to spend time with your son. My boys detect alot with me. Gotta start them younge. Do you got some more to still sift for finds. Or did you get it all.

TimmyNY:

Ben thanks you for your concerns about missing school. He told me to let you know that if you can make it down to Texas, to give us a call we would love to have you along. Ben got back to school and told his teacher what he did that day and the teacher requested to see the relics. Ben is to show the web site to the class in the morning and to do a show and tell with some of the finds. He has them mounted in a picture frame.

Just another note, tomorrow here in Texas we celebrate ?Confederates Heroes Day? (January 19). I have the day off so it is a good day to ? well next maybe year.

Thank you and all the rest for the comments. This made Ben?s week.

That is a nice assortment of relics....The time period could be a little earlier than 1850 , up till around the late 1860's...With the civil war buttons. Did you find anything around the area other than the dump site.....? Could be something there !!!! Seeker

It sounds like a great time. I love to look at all those little "doodads" like the domiino piece and the pipes.

Nice post, Walker.
