Million ounces <--- Say what????

I'm just as skeptical about the "million ounces". However if you consider some of the alleged "clues" (if they apply to this legend) we have a vein of quartz, 18" wide going into the mountain at least a dozen feet (possibly more) estimated at approximately 30% gold/silver content. Furthermore the claim that this vein is/was visible below the mine, 10', 20', perhaps 50' or more in height. So with that in mind it may be possible that the mine bores through the vein and has ore above and below. A floor of ore in the mine would be quite a site when the sun is going down.

Course I'm ever the skeptic but try to reason out rational possibilities.

Conceptuelized

In the Holmes manuscript , Waltz said how the gold vein runs the mountain about four hundred feet , where it drops out in the bottom of a wash . Put the 18 " wide and 400 feet long and you will find what percent of gold has the vein in the estimation of one milliuon oz.

Maybe I'm wayyyyy off-topic - but how can you take a statement like that 'literally'?
When somebody says "it's enough to make 20 men millionaires" - _I_ read it as: "there's an awfy lot of gold there!"

So then you agree, there is no 10^6 oz.
I believe it was _you_ trying to make up the numbers from JW's statement - finding it improbable so hence the whole story must be false.

The way _I_ read it is that there is a very rich vein there, nothing more - nothing less. I find it a waste of time trying to figure out how much gold in weight/volume it would make and decide from that whether the whole story of the LDM is true or false.
But hey - each to his or her own ...

Whoa Nellie !!! Far as I recall the 'big evidence' proffered of some huge amount of gold awaiting rediscovery at LDM was about enough to make 20 men millionaires. At the then market value that worked out to about 10^6 ounces. Are you still with me? Are you contesting the approximation? As if it would make a difference?

Now if that part is not so, there is no "whole story". The legend is all about a massive quantity of gold. Other wise the place is just some where a stinky old guy used to go camp.

Do you offer some other amount? Tell us about it.

Waltz was a miner and for sure he knew to make an estimation . But of course , like Loke wrote , he just could made a metaphor in comparison to the very rich gold vein .
With the dimensions of the vein which we know , if the vein has 15% gold , is in the right estimation of Waltz .
You believe how is impossible the vein to have 15% gold ?
If you want the truth , go and search for the mine . The evidence is out there . Stop to call a liar someone without evidences against his words . Would better for the records , to admit the legend as is and to make not modifications .

OK. No disrespect. Is English your first language? Again, no disrespect, but I am trying to figure out how to address what appears above this response of mine ^. Thank you. And again, no disrespect.

From the modern languages , the English is the third in the order of experience . I am yet afar to speak well the English language , but I am trying , like with the other things .

What I find funny is that in 1870 the population of Arizona wasn't even 10,000 people, and today we are well over 5 million. And even to this day 20 millionaires have not come out of that wilderness area. The Superstition/4 Peaks area is travelled more today than it has ever been in recorded history. I call serious bullshit on the Dutchman, the Dutchman BS mine story and his stupid chickens.

In that case - with all due respect - what are you doing here (on this forum)?

To offer my biased opinion of course herpty derrrrp

Free, un-asked biased opinion, where else can ya find that! :tongue3: Hey you can always take yer detector to the local city park - no one is going to force you to search the Superstitions Wilderness area after all.

I should add. A million oz -3 oz. This stuff takes time you know. About 2 hrs. So lets see 2 hrs divided into one million.

Nice bling Frank...
Couple more hours and you'll be able to gold plate the bumpers on yer Toyota.
Now, that would make some kinda statement when you show up at the outings, wouldn't it.
The "gold-witch" would be pointing at the old 4x4, sayin..."over there !! "

Wayne she wanted me to go today. 110 degrees I declined. No joy working in the heat as you know. I'm not a gold nut and it will wait.
