I think it would date to WWI era, as I'd say it has some of the black finish applied 1910-1923.

I'm with Ben. WWI era button. You may have come across a bivouac.

I didn't find anything exactly like your other relic.

I still think it is a horse rosette, but not standard military issue.

I saw a similar tab on a presentation box for a pistol presented to a Union Civil War Officer at a show once. This is so close to that one. Just a thought.

Looks like that cheap pot metal they used in the early 20th C.
