My sister and my niece were out digging tonight. My niece found this. I found 2 great seal buttons in this vicinity. I appreciate all of your input and my niece is dying to know what she has! 9845.webp

been hunting military relics for 30 yrs, never even saw such an item, not even in a book. really
awesome looking piece. I'll ask some of my other relic buddies if they've ever seen one.

O.k. so after commenting above, goggled the holsters and only found oval U.S. stamping in leather. So tried kipi cap bages/emblems next and the eleventh row down had one very similar to yours but without duel bands or border like yours so still no help.

The badge on the leather frog for the bayonet I believe we're circular but you may want to check.

It's a tough one for sure. I've tried googling many search terms, I guess I don't have enough vocabulary or knowledge of what the item could have been used for. I do thank you folks for all of your suggestions and comments!

It would be awesome if it was Civil war era! I'm thinking it's later.

Assuming this was found in Allegheny County, PA...?

I'm thinking it's WWI as you say you found Great Seal buttons nearby.`Based on the attachment points, I would say it is a horse related piece.

Pennsylvania Nat'l Guard troops and provincial Cavalry were called up to quell labor riots in the county in 1916.

This picture shows troops camped at Braddock, PA - May 4 1916.

Yes it was Allegheny county. Kinda far from Braddock. I've dug through many internet sites trying to find anyone that could have served in the national guard or was drafted into WWI.

The property was farmed for decades, there were many coal mines and flagstone quarries in the area. An 1862 map of the property shows a private road on the land. I am also very certain that a lookout tower was constructed between 1956 and 1959 that was used during the Cuban missile crisis, considering there was a Nike missile site about 2 miles away from the tower location.

Any back marks on the Great Seal buttons? That might give us a time frame.

I don't have a picture of the back mark. I crossed it against a list someone posted. What do you think?
