I know the east side of the state had trade routes that were before 1800. But we are not going to find the stuff the people farther east find. It would be fun to get access to Mackinaw and Drummond Islands to see what is buried there though.
Yet somehow our state government feels what there is, is worth protecting. Even though they are not going to look themselves.
God Bless

I'm in the U.P. a guy i work with found an 1804 half penny i think is was, near the train depot here in Menominee, seen a few pieces of silver from the 1860's, here in town, my oldest has been a 1936 buffalo in nice shape, but now i a cannot find it. kids :'(

Hey dave !
Several costal areas of Mi have had gringos since the late 1600s. Settlers started trickling in around the early 1800s , but the major movement was the late 1800s.Detroit, of course has a rich history, but just try and find any ground that isnt filled with red brick and garbage.Youre chances of finding really old coin is slim but possible. There are towns established in the early 1800s that have original ground.Do like they do in the East and hunt farm fields close to old structures.
My oldest Mi coin is a 1775 George. Also have found several coins from 1840 to 1880.Not an easy go....have yet to find a large cent , but I know they are there.!
Im gonna keep looking........Joe

Hey all Michigan here aswell. Escanaba area. I sometimes wonder where the heck all the oldies have gone. Between my brother and I this year he found the oldest with an 1870 IH. Now dont get me wrong,I love finding any coins....hell its free money.

Sometimes i think it would be fantastic to pull a flap up and see a thick reeded silver edge sticking up at me. I detected back in the 90's with a GTA 1000 and found 1 silver quarter. I dont know if I live in an are that used to have a crap load of broke-folk or what but i havent found a silver quarter since.

In another post I mentioned an older guy who kinda took me under his wing back in the 90's when i started detecting, the one that turned out to be a jerk whenever I found something "good". Well he has been detecting since the 70's in this area and he once showed me his finds. Im talkin folgers cans lining his basement wall full of clad. Not to mention the cans full of silver and wheaties. I think he may have cleared out this area pretty well. Obviously I know he didnt, but after a long dry spell it makes me wonder.

This comming summer I intend to detect alot. Im also going to try and do some artifact hunting. I found a copper celt/axe head that I have had roughly dated to be between 2000-7000 years old. Im not sure exactly where it falls in that timeline but I know its old for sure. This area has a rich native american history and I never thought about it until i found that artifact. Im gonna hit riverbeds and outlets/inlets once the spring runoff is done. I think there might be a whole lot of stuff out there that has been overlooked.

So in terms of coins we havent hit any real oldies yet. I have family with property in Sault Saint Marie and my parents own 40 acres on Sugar Island which is right off the shore from the Soo. My great grandparents owned a resort on the island back in the 30's so we are gonna go there this summer and see what we can find. I believe the Soo is the 3rd oldest city in the USA. So there has got to be some stuff there. Sorry for the long winded post. Just love Michigan treasure hunting. Ive included a picture of the artifact i found. Lemme know what ya think. Thanks all and HH.

Thank you for all the postings. I have been reading the Westen treasure mag and found that most people are finding rings and coins digging every thing. This spring if my detector is fix properly i am going to try digging every thing, if their isnt much junk readings. I also read that you sould check spots that do not look like they would be good spots. I have some favoret spots that I hount every year that give me some thing every time out. This old park I like to hunt is from the late 1800's so i am going to try to dig every thing. I will post what i find this year on the forum todays finds. I hope i have lots to show every one ( gold, gold, and silver?) Good luck to every one going out this year. :D
