Metal Canteen - Mexican or American Made - Need help with dating

Howdy!

Here's a metal canteen I found yesterday in So Cal. It's 7.5" across and 3.5" wide. It's got legs on the bottom and strap clips on each side. There are no visible markings. I saw one similar listed on ebay as a "mexican saddle canteen". Here's what I'm looking for.

1) Is it American or Mexican?

2) Could it be pre 1900?

3) How the heck can I get rid of all the rust?? Someone told me Navel Jelly....I'm not sure & I don't want to ruin it.


Any help would be much appreciated!!

I had one just like that (without the rust) and they were very common in the fifties, usually covered with felt cloth

I have a similar one that is covered with tooled leather and is american made.

Cool...maybe boy scouts if it is, very collectable.

Better not to try to remove the rust, but just put some type of oil on it to prevent further deterioration. Might eat throiugh and leave holes in it. Monty
