Mensa

packer backer : you asked -->Isn't there a difference between knowledge and intelligence?
***********
There certainly is, Intelligence is simply the ability to put knowledge to useful work and solve problems.

hmmm 3'1" sheesh a giant.

Arizona bob : here is one of the old 4 - 6 page monthly pages that I used to receive, the last 2 pages.

I just remembered that I still had a large handful of them in the closet file, which for some reason, I have never
run through the shredder.

As can easily be seen, most are just normal people.

Isn't there a difference between knowledge and intelligence? It doesn't really matter how intelligent you are if you don't know anything. And then that self-percieved intelligence could make you "think" you know everything, even the unknown existence of life after death. You don't know if it exists but you consider yourself intelligent and, if you don't believe, it must not be so. If you choose to believe, it must be so. No matter your IQ, you'll never have the answer. Hey, and I'm not a rocket scientist!

Intelligence is the ability to understand knowledge. If that is the case then, one could have a world of knowledge and still not be intelligent. It is what one does with aquired knowledge that makes him intelligent.

Thank you Don Jose! Yes, the normal occupation range for Mensa members runs from STREET BUMS to ROCKET SCIENTISTS. We are with the Southern Nevada (Vegas) Mensa "clan".

why does everyone need to be part of a 'group' of whatevers?
it is all about one-upmanship etc. and feeling secure in the people around you etc.

people use groups for bad and good :laughing9: :laughing9:

geez sometimes to stand on your own two feet and be yourself would be nice nowadays! :)

so tell all the 'groups' you are in everyone!! some might be in Weight Watchers, AA, marriage counseling groups, PETA, Fat and Proud, Free to be Me Sexual Enlightenment Group, Friends of ASPCA? ----etc....spit them out...

FarmerChick, the original post here was asking about Mensa. I think most of the responses stayed on topic. FWIW, I let my dues paying membership in Mensa lapse more than 10 years ago. I have one son who is still participating in Mensa, so I am still aware of "the happenings" in Mensa.

If you want to start a new topic/thread about one of the groups you listed above, I would be happy to share my experiences with that group (providing I had any). :coffee2:

An interesting idea for a thread.
A seperate thread.

Best,
Scott

ok sounds good
we wouldn't want to dump Mensa in with other groups
Mensa info in general was boring...I gather they don't do 'much' cause no one said what the heck they did actually do :laughing7: other than 'just get together'

It would be intersting to see 'how Mensa' changed 'anything' hmmm....lol

anyone accuse Mensa of being 'behind anything' :laughing7: I need Mensa people to fess up on what is this cult :laughing9: :laughing9:

Only group I belong to is the NRA but it's because of knowledge, not intelligence. :D
I think "belonging" to any group would be an individual choice and the decision to stay a member would normally be based on how comfortable a person felt with the rest of the group. The initial decision to become a member of any group though would be based on a common interest or bond. Bottom line AU I'd have to suggest that you go to a meeting or two and see if it looks like the organization has anything to offer you personally beyond just everyone having a high IQ. The IQ thing would be what you have in common but, it would be a shallow reason to stay if that were the only reason.

I only belong to one "group", and I have to admit I am hopelessly addicted to it.

TNET :hello:

Should there be a T-netter's Annonymus? :laughing9:

Declining a proffered opportunity to join in the early 1990's was a decision I made based solely on the organization's (at the time) widely publicized stand that children (and others) who are mentally handicapped

should be euthanized since they "offer no assistance in advancing the evolution of mankind".

I don't recall (nor do I wish to) the exact wording of the explanation for their beliefs, but suffice it to say the gist of it all repulsed me.

Leopards don't change their spots, and I'd be willing to bet Mensa hasn't changed their stand on this matter either. Like many other organizations we could all name, theirs is sure to have some really good folks on

the membership role, and I harbor no animosity or ill-will toward them, but to support Mensa would be a silent acknowledgement of support for their views, and for myself, I won't support such in any way.

So basically, not only "know-it-all" snobs, but "know-it-all" snob supremacists.

That's my take on it Scott, for what it's worth.

Wow. I consider myself to be a proud a-hole but that is messed up even by my standards. That is NAZI-esque.

You are a pilot, right? Do you read your FCIF much? If another jock tells you there is a storm coming, before you fly... you do actually check with the weather guy, right?

Anyway, Mensa has never taken a stand on hurting anyone. Like many organizations, the members write letters and articles for submission to the various newsletters and magazine. In November 1994, two members (Jason Brent & Jon Evans) had articles published in support of euthanasia. Mensa investigated, and fired the newsletter editor (Nikki Frey).

Brent & Evans support of euthanasia has NEVER been a part of Mensa.

Sky Pilot, your "Mensa" plane just crashed & burned. Luckily, you were in the simulator, so we can restart the ride! Okay, your heading is 360 on Rwy 1, vis is unlim, wind is calm, you are cleared for take-off...

HI Farmer chick yep, I belong to one that I am honored to be part of, the Explorers club. It is based upon what you have actually done, you are elected into this group by a panel of your peers. The members include many of our top Explorers of the present and past, plus the new scientists of the Universe.
