What can I say after only 5 hunts with my new machine.:metaldetector::blob8::metaldetector:

We gridded for 5.5 hours & got our equal best Roman Coin count (for this site) again!

The gold coin was found on my second run & it sounded like a deep coin. Not that deep by some standards (about 6inches) but it was on its side. It was a total shock, because this site has had no Celtic coins & nothing older than 1st AD, until now!!

I had a thought in my head for sometime that my next great find, I would just casually walk over to Dad & say 'hay look at this ''OK'' coin'.....& then enjoy the reaction. Well that went out the window & my gold coin happy muddy boot jig popped out...Dad was struggling for a guess, because we have been hoping for a nice sceat or hammered & the silver is just not showing, so as a last ditch guess he stouted 'gold' - 'yessss'(I said & handed it over)

Sorry the dirt pictures didn't work out, my camera for outdoors is cheap.

33 Roman Bronze Coins
Roman Pin Head
Saxon Pin Head
Roman Bracelet pieces
1st C Roman Fibula

Notice the lack of pottery, as we grid off the main area.

Celtic Gold Stater, (mid to late 1st century BC), Whaddon Chase type, devolved head of Apollo, rev. horse right, winged object above and wheel with six spokes below. ABC2442 (Latest book states Scarce, did a quick look, less than 100 recorded)

Like all my Celtic Coin this will be recorded properly with the acedemics so as to help further study of their distribution etc...

Wow! Even by your standards where Roman bronze draws a yawn! I'm about to book my flight over there.......can you pick me up at the airport?? :notworthy: :laughing7:

WTF.. Cool.. I might be traveling to Switzerland next year do you know if legal to detect?

Sorry, no knowledge of Switzerlands Laws.

UPDATE:

Someone asked about value & Dad dug this research out:

''The modern-day equivalent of the hoard's value was estimated at somewhere between £500,000 and £1,000,000.[SUP][/SUP]This figure was arrived at by using the cost of military service as a comparison: Dr John Sills stated, "[A] gold stater perhaps bought around a month’s service in the 3rd century BC and five gold staters an infantryman for the duration of a campaign in the 2nd century BC, with ten gold staters buying a cavalryman."[SUP] [/SUP]It was also based on the observations of a previous find in Alton, Hampshire in 1996, when Dr Roger Bland and John Orna-Ornstein of the British Museum suggested a gold stater would be worth around £1,000 when minted.''

The paying of mercenaries by the highest levels of Celtic clans was well know, but for those 'soldiers' to do anything with that money, mostly meant a trip to main land Europe to spend it.

No doubt about it....... you are the man!!!!! Congratulations on the great find. It's awesome to see the history you two dig up and share with us.

Incredible! Wow.

Great finds! Excellent!! Banner Finds, For Sure!!!

What's that like 100 years before the birth of Christ??

That's insane congrats on the sweet coin..

~Blaze~

I tried messing with the programs on the first day & found it very confusing & it also felt like I was missing stuff. When I started using the P3 program on the second day, I immediately knew what the machine was telling me. Much closer to how I ran the GMP. I'm going to stick with this program for some time until I start to customise.
Thanks Cru. I am doing exactly the same thing, though I like the ablitiy to switch to a higher reactivity instantly when I get into an Iron Patch.
Great job mate,
ZDD

Magnificent find!!!!!

That would make anyones year!!

Depends on which theory you hold for his actual Birth date, but maybe 30 odd years before.
