Great find! how deep was it?
I believe it was a turnable finial to lock your cartridge box or saddle bagAlso, the second picture of the group finds there's a little piece directly in the middle. What is it? I found one on Saturday. Came out neon green. Not sure what it is. It's directly in middle of that pic. There's a pistol shot between two rivets. It's directly below the pistol shot.
Thanks!
She was about 10 inches. I found the back 1st but it was still guilted on the inside so I stuck the pin pointer back in and found the better half. That was another thing that made me think it was a NY button. you know how they like to fall apart..[/http://www.re-enactmentshop.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/lightbox_fullscreen/global/shop/american_civil_war/ACW-Shoulder_scales_sergeants.JPG

No not a single thing. There was a Union Maryland regiment camped at this site. it's probably a staff officer's.I've always known Maryland buttons to be associated to the confederate cause. But it seems that most of you relics are union. Seems interesting. Have you found any other Confederate buttons at that spot?
Turns out it's part of a shoulder scale, the locking mechanism. Also, the second picture of the group finds there's a little piece directly in the middle. What is it? I found one on Saturday.
