Man "caught red handed stealing relics from Kennessaw Mt. Nat.Battle field park.

Just to answer your question i'm 90% sure it was in Broad Day light. Also some fellow relic hunters were talking last week [the 16th] and we found it unusual that they never released the mans name ,usually somewhere ,someone would have said something to the effect of Mr .......... ....... of Cherokee Co, allegedly was digging , I know he was caught red handed , but still no name? Hmmmmm

Either who he was, is more important then the relics to them,
And they are considering a Hush-up

Or it never happend & was staged as a scare tactic

thanx for answering that question. It confirms my suspicion, that 99.9% of the "scary stories" we read about md'rs roughed up (arrested, fined, tickets, confiscations, etc...) are usually all going to fall into one of these categories: a) someone who couldn't take a warning, b) someone hunting obvious historic monuments, or c) someone waltzing around in broad-daylight in front crowds of lookie-lous who doesn't have the presence of mind to be a little frickin' discreet.

So it's not navy-seal-commando-archies lurking behind every rock & tree waiting to jump out and pounce on md'rs, as some skittish folk would believe.

Yea I hear at these N park sites there's more [ motion detecting cameras, ground sensors , etc, ] than at Area 51 :laughing7: . Also I would like to comment of the fact that kennessaw Mt, NBP is more the most visited Battle field in the USA , more than Gettysburg & while I have never been to Gettysburg & don't know the parks lay out , Kennessaw MT , is ONLY visited more because it is more of a recreation area than anything ; IMO 70-80% of it's visitors are there to jog ,ride bikes, walk and other recreations , than to see the park for it's History . I have nothing against these activities & there's not much of a better backdrop for them , I,m just stating the facts on why it,s the Most Visited. Davers

If it happened, there will be a (public) arrest record. If the record can't be found, it never happened and is just another smear tactic by the archies.

Ill do some more research & see if I can come up with a name. Davers

That park is only 45 mins from my home. Somebody just the other day asked me if I thought the park near my home was being watched. I told them I wasnt sure but wasnt going to look either. Im not going to look for artifacts in any park regardless if its being patrolled or not.

Here's one way to find out if they are "watching" electronically. Go build a 4-20 MHz frequency generator and stick it on a rock somewhere and see if anybody comes to "find" it. No laws concerning electronics projects that AREN'T metal detectors. Don't abandon it however, that would probably be considered littering. Better yet, build a dozen and have some friends drive them around for awhile. Personally, I wouldn't waste the time doing it though.

I for one will NEVER go onto a park to metal detect.

Last year there were stories of numerous small holes being dug up at Gettysburg. From the report, it sounded like squirrels, not metal detector people. Could have been squirrels WITH metal detectors, though. Probably from area 51. (Couldn't resist). But seriously, there's no way to know truth from legend.

I have worked in two museums, one educational archives, and had three offers from separate institutions yesterday to do more of the same.
things are in the back rooms.
for preservation and study.
if we keep things from you, it is because we are hiding alien visitations and diverting gold an gems to off shore accounts?
What do they do with them after they study them?...wait, I know, they leave them in the back room.

disturbing attitude to believe museums and archeologists have an agenda to hide objects from the public.

if things are in a back room...it is because it is being studied, or preserved until that time when some one does study the object.
just because the museum restricts access to qualified researchers, instead of making a petting zoo for artifacts....

nevermind...
..........I have news for ya............they are,and do...and another thing........many museums are trying to even get away from displaying actual items, have pictures and stories instead. We just CANNED a curator we recently hired for trying to do that here. This new one is about to go that route as well....ticks me off.Museums also rotate displays.I once drove over 200 miles to see an item,I had seen before. When I got there I was informed it was rotated out,and was likely to not be seen again...I asked if I could schedule a private meeting to see it and was told they dont do that and that the item may not even be at the Museum anymore.....also.......NEVER donate anything........if a city owned Museum gets in financial trouble, they can,and will sell off items!!!The state condemned a huge swath of land through a good friends Ranch a couple years ago,and part of the agreement was that he was to retain anything hat was found during their archeological study/excavations........yea,he got back a box of broke in have grinding rocks and bunch of ruined arrow points(NOTHING...not one complete item!!)...they were also supposed to provide a display in the Museum of other historical items that were found....they found a bunch....and none have been seen again!!!Dont even get me started on the whole subject!!!

Yea,the oldest Duck Decoys ever found were excavated from The Lovelock Cave in Nevada...............NOT ONE DECOY is in NEVADA,they are spread all over the US,and last I heard not one was on display...............they were found in the 1920's..........why?Why are they not at least on display where they came from?

These studies......if the public wants any info they may get lucky and get to buy...at great expense a report...on RARE occasion

I don't doubt this at all.

I think this is a failure of "professional" responsibility on the part of archaeologists. They may (and do) claim there's no money for this, but their responsibility is to bring history to us. When they fail at that, it is a breakdown of how things should work. At a minimum, I think they should display results from say, a salvage project in a public meeting when done. These are done with tax dollars. A lot of people have also been impacted by then and so that seems to me to be a minimum effort to report back to the community. Cost = about none to have it in a community center.

I am not saying at all that archie's in some situations are not a valuable asset, but they have got like our politicians and seem to forget who,or what their cause is.Like Bum stated, this info should be shared with the public...come to the local school! That would be awesome!Custer/Little Bighorn is a fantastic example of archeology at great work.So much has been gleaned and info made available.I honestly cant think of the last recent dig done where I could see/get a report.Coyote Press has many reports for sale, but they are big$$$$,and I note much info is left out...for what reason I dont know

Still looking for the name of the person that was caught [ I have looked through several local newspapers ] still nothing now I need to check a copy of our local JUST ARRESTED paper that came out Friday Oct, 18th & covers much of N,GA, including Cobb Co,Ga.

Excellent idea!

Let us know what you find.

Hope I'm not chiming in out of turn; this is my first post here - came across the thread in a search for "Marietta" - my father-in-law is a local attorney, and knows just about eveyone on the force in Cobb county, and I had him ask around. No reports whatsoever of anyone caught MDind at Kennesaw mountain. He's a digger too, and he told me he wold have heard right away if this had happened.

kuger...while I accept your observation about museum personell...mixing archeologists and curators is problematic. generalizing behaviors is also problematic.

yes, museums trade, sell, and loan objects...yes, collections are rotated...not many people wish to see the same display every year...and museums are business institutions...new sells tickets for admission.

there are no absolutes in museum science...unless, it is to not do anything that can not be undone as science advances methods of preservation.

with your credentials, I find it odd you can not gain access to any institution...
