I heard on the radio this morning that rangers caught a man stealing relics from the Kennessaw Mountain National Battle field Park, I have not checked into the story since getting home this afternoon but the story did not mention a metal detector but I would assume he had one; also the Ranger in charge stated the man likely thought that with the park shut down ( Gov, BS ) that there would be no rangers on duty , boy was he wrong. Last week I was kidding with my wife saying ,I guess ill be going to the mountain soon ,she says YEA RIGHT. Now the man is facing felony charges :ILL bet money all he found was ALOT of fired & squashed minies & round balls. HOPE IT WAS WORTH IT. Sorry I do not have a link , as my computer skills are dismal. Id just google the ATLANTA or Marietta Ga. newspaper's or TV media. :blackbeard:

Hope he does serious time and high fines.....

Well the more metal detecting shows that pop up on TV ...Is the cause of all these things....... And they just keep putting those shows on TV ...... They should all be taken off the air........

If people would quit watching them, they would go away.

Never watched it myself on TV.

What caused things like this before the shows? I'm sure it wasn't long after the first metal detector was sold that someone was digging where they were not supposed to be.

They have antennas on towers, etc here in Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania that can pick up MD frequencies and the rangers also have portable devices that can pick up frequencies also.. My thoughts are the police officer used the mobile device and got a pickup on it for a MD. I doubt he saw the guy going into the woods with a detector. I know they do this around here on our battlefields. Like i have mentioned before, one guy who got caught a few years ago got 3 years in prison and $58,000 fine (he found a rectangle CSA buckle) and another one got 1 year in prison and $30,000 fine... Digging in the parks is not worth it.

I agree, all that stuff should stay in the ground, hidden from all people forever!! :dontknow:

Well we know that ...BUT since all these TV shows came on the air ...IT has got out of hand so there is a lot of blame there.............We always had some of it but now it is out of control .Every one has got to quit watching those metal detecting tv shows......... So they will take them off the air...... If you watch that crap you have no room to complain about what brainless people with detectors are doing out there.....

I wonder what time of day they caught that clown? Like .... high noon in broad-daylight?

:( take it any way you want. Just nobody died :dontknow:

Since it is a National Park battlefield and against federal law to hunt just curious why you feel the artifacts belong in some crook's private collection?

People like him give all of us a bad name and our hobby a black eye.

I have been to Custers last stand a half dozen times including once right after it had been illegally hunted with metal detectors at night,
There were hundreds of open holes across Last Stand Hill. They were robbing the history of the battle

Archies have been able to track the battle's progress through the cartridges found fired by the same gun thus learning more about what really happen.

I am all for hunting legal locations where battles may have been, but I fully support prosecution of anyone trying to illegally hunt our National Battlefields to steal for their private collection or to sell.....

Have the archies figured out if Custer won or lost yet?:dontknow:

Well when your wiped out to the man it would be my guess you lost the battle.

What happen from the time Custer left Reno and attacked the village till their bodies were found is lost, but through multiple field searches with metal detectors and modern forensics they have been able to piece together a great deal of the battles progression....

Only takes a few to screw it up for the many that do follow the rules.

Like most Americans (I presume), I've read and reread about Custer and I've actually gone there. It's quietly very impressive. And a National Treasure. There are just such awesome places that belong to all of us.

Most of you are familiar with my views of archaeologists but in this case they have shone brightly. They have given us the irreplaceable gift of "seeing back in time" through diligent work and thorough interpretation to trace out a battle that is part of our national heritage.

I'm sure there is more information out there, and I would be proud to be a part of recovering it under the auspices of a disciplined study, as I'm sure many of you would.

But to loot it just to get a jar of artifacts that robs Americans of one of their most important stories - well, no, I don't think that's proper.

I'm with TH on this one.

It would help if the shows also showed and taught the ethics that go along with metal detecting.
Also comes down to common sense. Some people have more than others.
Either the guy is a detectorist and tried to sneak in the hunt or he was new & clueless towards the law. Considering the location, I'd lean towards the first one. :dontknow:
