Mag needed ASAP Helo crash Tampa Bay

Nice job Pete. Proud of you. Thanks for the email update as well. Now will you buy me some Pyrat rum?

Yeah, because you drank it all celebrating. So how did you find the rotor blades so quickly? Congrats again on a fine recovery job.

My dive buddy has a great dive boat with a Humminbird 1197 sidescan. The rotor blades showed up very clearly.

It looks like they are covered in barnacles. Do barnacles form on objects that fast? Just curious.

Tragic event. Just looking at photo and the damage to the blade towards the edge, blade to blade or sometype of impact to blade edge.
Thoughts and prayers to the lost pilots family.

Trez

Pete, congrats on the recovery

My dive buddy called me this morning and said "you want to make a dive today?" To make a long story short, we already recovered the chopper blades. Sorry G.I.B.View attachment 717811

Nice Job Pete. I hope you split some of the $2K reward money with the guy that turned you on to the site & reward.

"The FAA is offering a 2K reward for the blades.

I used to fly R-22's so I have a little insight. I also own a 40' Endeavour boat on Tampa Bay. 2 staterooms, heads, galley, and so on. I've got the dinghy, and all my dive gear- 2 steel 100's and 2 aluminum 80's. The water is, on average, 15 feet deep in this area. Visibility is limited, usually only a couple of feet. I, in a previous time, was a rescue diver, so I have experience on several levels.

What I don't have is a portable Mag.

So, if you can say, 'Have Mag, will travel' ~ Let me know. I'll split it 50/50"

I was kinda wondering the same thing, but it doesn't sound like like GIB is upset about it so I guess it isn't an issue. Unfortunately one must be careful as to what one shares or divulges on a public forum as this very thing will result... Hopefully the person who received the info and benefited from it will be generous enough to split it with GIB... It would be the righteous thing to do...

...and this just in from G.I.B.

The information I passed on was all public information. Widely available on the internet and from various news sources.

1. I know where an old wooden sunken wreck is.
2. I've yet to find anyone I can trust with that information as I'm not a salvage guy and don't have the know how to deal with it.
3. One of my secondary goals here was for me to be present to get a first hand account of the recovery. I'd offered up my boat to ensure I would be there. Sure, a couple of extra dollars is always nice. I'm also a freelance writer for several nautical pubs. This would have made a great story. Opportunity missed.

I've got something called the 'wallet test'. It's where I hand my wallet to someone and they hold it for a few days. When I get it back, do I look inside, or just slip it back in my pocket and go on?

There are only a couple of people I know that pass the wallet test.

(and my wife is not one of them, said with a smile)

I concur. Give him a little something for letting you know, Pete!

Darren, That's what I like about you. We think the same way. Pete should give G.I.B. a finders fee for turning him onto the reward and the project. Knowing Pete, I think he will share in the reward as soon as he gets the money from the FAA.
Knowing the Federal Government and their Red Tape, that could take 30 days or longer.

Here's hoping everyone has a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

I called G.I.B. Thu. night and got his voice mail. I left a message but he did not return my call. I had no plans to go out there until my dive buddy called me Fri. morning. He saw the reward ad on the internet. G.I.B. sent me this PM:

Next time, give me a call will ya? It's not really the money I was after... I write for several nautical publications and was going to do a feature article on the blade recovery. I would have rode along, and not taken any of the reward, just for the chance to do the story.

I went to the site with my dive buddy and an eyewitness to the crash. We plan on splitting the reward 3 ways. I have no problem with sharing the reward with G.I.B. The pic below is our boat going out to the site. My dive buddy is on the right and the eyewitness is on the left. He said he heard a "pop" and looked up to see the rotor blades fly off the heli. It then dropped like a rock.
