Been a couple slow months in the construction field around here, Actually no work, and being an independent contractor in Oregon you cannot get unemployment benefits. So we plan for things like this. But in the meantime I took the trusty F-2 out and played a little. Helps get mind on vacation, not that mine is ever on that trip. LOL All I can say is I made more mding this month than I did at work. LOL. A whole $.92. Not bad considering that the ground was frozen most of the time, thank God for tot lots. Wish I had a camera to show you the pictures but that is how it goes. Guess this time off is a good time to work on my spices and seasonings, got some on ebay so we'll see how that goes. Got my chin up and trying hard so HH all

During my recent time off I did several computer jobs. Build, repair or update pc's for old folks and others. I usually charge them a bowl of stew, a soda pop, sandwich, milk or cookies. Wife used to get angry with me for doing things for free so I started charging lunch or snacks.

I wonder how many geek squad gigs I've taken away from those mostly youg and inexperienced tekkies, but I don't fret it. I get way more satisfaction than monetary rewards can provide and turned away more than a few $20 bills or more, knowing those I help could not possibly afford the "experts" whose work I often had to repair.

No, not retired or rich or even all that financially secure, just smiling my days away.

There is some new construction going on at the far end of my street where I go walking. I was watching some work on a new house and the foreman was yelling bloody murder. Not one of the framers could speak English and he was trying to tell them to do something. He finally had to go show them what he wanted. I figured at least one of them was a legal and could speak english, but apparently not. I have seen all 9 of this particular crew climb into one small pickup with a Texas tag and head out to the convenience store and buy a pop and a sandwich at lunch time. About all they do is framing. I have never seen any of them doing drywall or interior work. Monty

I guess im lucky...i work for a large electrical power plant and havnt really seen or had to deal with the the pain you people are talking about as far as not being able to find work! Im sorry to hear so many are having a hard time these days in the trades...! hopefully things will pick up for everyone in the near future! ....bigscrub

Hey things are looking up, I start a job tomorrow, not much, but my daughter made a good point, "It'll make the truck payment" Well after 2 months I'll take anything that has a check to it. After talking to some people here, one of the big lumber yards is shutting down and some have not worked since July.
Thanks for the support and lets hang on for the ride. Big problem here is banks will not release any money to builders, or owner/builders.

Doggone, I'm sorry to hear that Dave. Several contractors I know here are saying the same thing- haven't worked in months... Things are sure tough out there for that field. Is the gig you got steady or just a side job? Ever work a side gig you have skills in that you could fall back on for a bit? Sheet metal is picking up pretty good right now, at least where I work, although others are still ailing. Any welding skills or something similar? It'll get ya by until things swing the other way anyways!

Here's hoping the best for ya bro- :icon_sunny:

Jeff,
Good to hear from you, no it is just a little side job, just enough to make the truck payment. I have put apps in at a few places. Nothing really to fall back on, unless I want to be a bureaucrats, and we know how I feel about that...lol. But after talking to some yesterday my ship may be sinking but at least the hole in plugable, unlike some who's ship has sunk.

It's good to hear you got out. amidst all the crap that's going on. hopefully a full timer will come around but in the meantime. those side job's are a blessing. dont forget the detector when you go.

Sweet! Making the truck payment is no small accomplishment. We will keep praying for more for ya! Maybe you can find something that uses that fancy degree of yours that isn't buried under a mtn of bureaucrat poopy? I know it would be few and far between but you are pretty gifted in that area as well. The kids loved ya and heaven knows there are a lot of them needing help! I totally understand your aversion to the bureacracy though!! Hang in there...will keep praying for blessings for ya!

i understand were your coming from im a carpenter but thank god i have other skills im also a car mech wich is good people need transportation. so any exta skills is good. i wish ya luck. willy.
