Six hours of steady swinging today at the nipple site, I call it that because I got a mid 17th C. nipple button there a couple of weeks ago.

Couldn't be more pleased with the results. Found a piece of an iron pot, and a lamp part, so if there was any kind of site there we were on it. Plus given the number of buttons, and a couple of coins.

I got a couple of firsts; (which is harder to do all the time, (after 7 years)) and makes it a good hunt.

1) french Liard either 1650's (edit, yes it's 1650's)or 1690's not sure just yet, but either way a major milestone copper for me. The first ever pos. IDable 1600's coin I've found, so am supper happy with that one. (that's one off the top ten list too)
2) a "french Marine" button, with the drilled shank
3) the small pin may be a "sweet heart pin, I'm not sure, but what we at forst thought said holy mary, I now know doesn't, it's latin same as on military badges, so any ideas ?
4) nice blow hole button
5) and a GEO II with readable date 1744

Big Time Fun.
And back at it tomorow.

Sweet heart pin ? IDK, ROMEO ? I know you have one, but I think bigger.

3 q-tips of dirt off the pin, sitting on a quarter.

Good Luck Out There.

Weird things can happen though. Several years back I found a little French patch, dug a few Marines buttons and and all the usual stuff a person would find at such a site.... and then I got the signal of all signals. I was pretty happy even getting a copper coin out of there being the age it was, but the sound was just so good I thought that has to be silver. So I took my time digging the hole, slowly moved the dirt out and there it was, I was right a silver coin... I then picked it up and brushed the dirt off a little and seen it was worn, but that had me thinking this thing could be really old. Finally I turned it the correct way and it was a damn Victoria quarter.

When I started metal detecting I found a steel washer that had the exact same diameter as a half cent, I was so happy thinking that I found my first half cent. Then you will never guess what happened... it stuck to a magnet (for those who don't know, a copper coin would NOT stick to a magnet)

Now I call that a good day in my booksโ€ฆneat pin too..congrats..

THANKS AHAB, but sadly no, I think we have pretty much exhausted this site, we know there is another near by though.
Yes my good friend it was a "FUN DAY"

I'm looking forward to a reply from ROMEO because he has a sweet heart pin, and hoping he'll be able to shed some light on that.

Nice finds there Rick...that Liard is in much better than the usual condition...I've only found 2 and neither are even close to that condition. I did find a similar pin, albeit a little larger and silver. I was able to find a match to my sweetheart pin online. Given the size of yours I think it would be considered a lapel pin. I didn't read all of the replies but as you know, the motto and coat of arms are of Great Britain...here's mine.

the only liard with anything on it that i have is one like yours, after that I got nothing

Nice old site you got going, hope there's more there for ya

Nice hunt Rick, congrats on the French copper! The shanks on those French Marine buttons are really long!

When you're thinking old...maybe victorian is small let down, as you def. know therer are a ew dates that are great finds.

Wow, congrats on an exceptional 1650's liard, Rick. :hello2: I can only imagine how it feels to hold a freshly dug coin that old. The buttons are very nice too as is the sweetheart pin. Glad your site gave up a few more oldies!

Congrats Rick on getting the coin and striking another one off the top ten, what a great feeling when it happens.

Nice finds there Rick.

That's a nice one to have coming out in such great shape!

NICE HUNT - NICE FNDS

Was just thinking how lucky I was, not only to find that coin, but that it is nearly corrosion free. (head scratch)
Strange as more than half the coppers we dig are toasted, and most of them 100 or more years newer.
Dave, maybe I was packin a horse shoe, you think I'd have known it.

Just how it goes. Pretty much all the French coppers I've found are rough, but do have 2 liards and one double that are very nice. Good enough to cross of the list anyway, because when they're ugly like my 8 reale, I still feel I need another.

Very nice oldies there, won't see any like those turn up here, not going to stop me from hunting , cause dang I am overdue to find any silver quarter which will be my first big silver of the year here !

That Liard is the type of find I'm hoping to dig here in Louisiana. GREAT coin there!

Thanks BB, I think it a "GREAT coin" too. Anytime you break your oldest record it's a good find, esp, when you have several early 1700's
Well you, if memory servs me got a 1722 12 deniers last year, I might be slightly off, but I'm close, so you could definitely get one of these too...I think.

Thanks, again.
