I've been spending a lot of time out in the "field of dreams" with Oxbowbarefoot but he couldn't get out today so I hit my draped bust dime site. I almost forgot what great history I have in my own back yard but this was a good reminder. Things started slow then I got a solid 77 on the at pro at 8 inches and got this liberty cap, a half cent to boot. Only my second one the other being an 1803. Now it's time to hit this place hard. Grabbed a few tombacs a big pewter button, and a 1787 connecticut copper with great detail. Hard to believe the CT and the liberty cap were only feet away and are in completely different shape. The next was a big surprise because I always say these old time farmers didn't have much money and silver is hard to come by. SILVER SPOON!! No way!! Couldn't believe it. The only marks are the MC. I did a little research and have a few possibilities on the maker but not certain. Maybe the MC is just someone's initials and not a makers mark. Any thoughts? Unfortunately I was about out if time and had to make the trip down the mt. It was pretty hard leaving when things were just picking up. Oh we'll there's always next time and the trip don't seem so bad when there's finds like this waiting.

I also found a old copper yesterday. .its a little different. .the back side says Britain next to the woman standing..I can also make out a 6 on the end of the date...wondering if you know what it is?? AND if you could tell me how to clean it better? ? Any help would be great. .

It's a British King George II Halfpenny Circa. 1729-1739. Judging by the pics I think I would leave it alone.

Took me a while with all those varieties but this is my first coin I was able to ID myself. As for it being a very common one. Oh well. One of my nicest coppers to come from the ground.

A lot of times there's similar ones so you can go through pretty quick until you spot one that's close which tells you you're likely in the right zone.

Thanks guys..I have the red book.and the only thing I can find thats close to it I s the 1786 penn

Except for the Britain on yhe obverse side..

I don't think it will clean up any more than it already is. Try looking online

I couldn't resist. I also have a 33.2-Z.12 Mine came from the Hillyer Ryder collection, earlier sold in Lyman Low's 149th sale, April 29, 1910. For those who don't know, Ryder wrote the original reference on the coinage of Vermont and Massachusetts and they are still referred to by his numbering system.

1787 CONNECTICUT COPPER -
MILLER 33.2-Z.12
Rarity: Very Common

Good match here, and with the matching die crack under Britannia's arm, and it being the only use of the reverse die on this variety, that solves it.

1787 Connecticut Copper - Miller 33.2-Z.12

Oops! I forgot, I have two 33.2-Z.12's. This one is from the Dr. Thomas Hall collection and on reverse picture you can make out some of the white ink attribution on the edge of the coin. Hall wrote the original reference on Connecticut coppers in 1888 and put his attribution in white ink on the edge of the coin. His reference work was updated by Henry Miller in 1920 as more varieties became know. This variety was originally known as obverse 33.12. Hope I'm not boring you.

I'm intrigued by that pewter button. Usually those have some kind of design, and are occasionally military. Is there anything on the front? I don't ever recall seeing one with a blank face.

Nice finds! There's probably a lot of surprises waiting for you to run a coil over! Play nice with the bears or you'll be hearing from their union, your making them eat on the run, stand still! Lol! Ya be careful out there!

Nothing that I can see. I've found many that are blank or time in the soil has just destroyed them. This one is a bit strange. Bigger than usual and a lot thicker.

I found my rev war one not that far from where I was hunting so when it came out I was praying for another.
