Let's See The 1500 and 1600s Coins Dug In The US

After seeing the post by button king of his 16th century Lizzie it really got me wondering. How many hunters in the states and Canada have found a 1500s coin? I have a good friend here in Maine that found a cut 16th century silver and he's found a Jeton as well(I know a Jeton isn't a coin.) so I wanted to see some of these. I figured I'd add in the 17th century coins cause I think it'd be a pretty small list if not....and I love seeing these early ones. So bring em on guys and gals. You've seen mine so I won't bore you with those again. Since they still haven't really gone away lol.
I wish I could change the title to include my Canadian brothers. Of course I want to see yours and apologize for the title

Got this coin from a spill in Montreal two weeks ago (posted on Treasurenet and my main forum CMD)

1490 - Blanc Couronne Charles VIII
My oldest coin to date.

It's my only Canada dug 15th century one, found a few 17th century ones in the past but never a 16th.

Just got news from a Numismatic forum in France. One of the coins from the Montreal spill is a quinzain of Louis XIV (1640) struck over the douzain Henri III (1574-1589) So I can say I have found a 16th Century coin after all. DSC_0630.JPG

Nothing from the 1500's here, but i have a few from the 1600's. Carolus II 1/2 real cobs (1665-1700). Phillipus V 1/2 real cobs (1700-1724)

Nice Oldies everyone!
I'm gonna put up one that I needed some help Identifying back when I dug it, was recovered right alongside a section of RR track used to haul ships out of the water.
Didnt think it was silver at first. It is an undated issue of Johannes IV Portugal, struck in 1642, it is a 'Cruzado' of 400Reis, the dots in cross arms are the Lisbon mintmark.
Every example I see in auction records bears the 'SOO' (500) 1642 coinage revaluation countermark, likely this one left Portugal soon after issue,
(who wouldnt want 25% more money?) Here it is in all its salt chewed glory.:laughing7:
Thanks for looking and hope to see more sweet finds here, HH, Herbie.

Edit: wow those pix are not my best work, '400' can be seen to right of crown, here's a scan of one in better condition.
Part of the legend reads 'In Hoc Signo Vinces' I remember this slogan was printed on Pall Mall cigarette packaging from my smoking days...

One More, my best Mass Silver, even has a spot of clear field. I believe it is a Noe-28 threepence, which were described as 'Poorly struck, all are dogs' by Walter Breen.
I think this has a very nice strike and can find no finer example in auction records.
If anyone can enlighten me on better examples or if I've misidentified this one I'd be grateful to hear from you.
Best wishes and happy hunting, Herbie.

Edit: Also wondering about what appears to be an inverted "M" in the legend. other examples seen do not exhibit this.

Some very very nice early coins guys! I forgot all about this thread but I'm glad to see it back.

Hey buddy this is a beauty Mass silver. It's def an NOE 28 3 pence. That M is interesting. At first I though it just had a strange wear pattern and that it was a normal M. But it does look as though it may be inverted. I have a contact who is the most renowned Colonial silver expert in the country. I will shoot him an email and get his thoughts.

You've found some incredible coins Aureus!!!! Congrats

I have a couple to add. One likely started out as a 1590s douzain and is in terrible condition. I had no idea it was silver or coin related when I dug it. I also found my first 1600s copper this year....a heavily counter marked 1653 copper cob

1500s coin

Here's the only one I have dug. 1500s 4 maravedis dug in a corn field here in Maryland. It's not broken just cracked. A brillon composition.

Hello Everyone,

I dug a worn 1696 King William III Shilling in the spring of 2016 on a very old site (circa 1699). This is my oldest coin to date.

Marevidi 1652 restrike over a 1621 or 7 copper with silver swirl , vellion. I have found 9 coins from 1700s.all my old finds are associated with the 1733 fleet disaster here in the keys.this coin was 81- 112 years old when it was lost in the 1733 disaster. Somehow it made its way to the beach with some of the survivors. Most likely came from the survivors of the galleon wreck el lerri. Here it lay for 283 years before I found it laying on top of the sand on the beach. IT was what we call " teed up" no metal detector just saw it laying there on top.
