Does anyone have hard data on whether there are less coins found on the beach now then a few years ago? I do recall an article showing a significant decrease in coin and general money usage as opposed to credit and other forms of payment in past 3-4 years. [Pandemic effect?] I was wondering if this translated into less coins on the beach to find metal detecting?

My own data, taking a sample of about 100 hrs of metal detecting for each of 5 years (about 4,500 coins) doesn’t show any clear trend in terms of decrease in number of coins found per hour. However, I do a lot of water hunting and this might not apply to the dry sand or even to land diggers.

Would anyone venture an opinion?

Well first off, there are a lot more people metal detecting on the beaches than ever before. Secondly with the pandemic most places were closed and the beaches have just really started catching up for the past two years. Third and most important, there used to be a lot more vendors on the beach, renting floats, boogie boards, food and other things. So be glad you are finding much of anything.

I feel your pain when it comes to the massive increase in "other than precious metals". My opinion is that 2 things have occurred in our world. People have less interest in "value" or "worth". It used to be that jewelry wasn't just an item to wear but a store of value. Perhaps now that most people have zero savings and are in debt up to their ears, they figure there is no use or even reason to consider saving. Heck, worst case scenario, the government will take care of me. Secondly, people are fake. From plastic surgery to plastic money (debt). People don't really care about ownership. As long as they have the "appearance" of ownership. This mindset takes no back seat in regards to their personal appearance as well. Big gold plated chains, big lab created gem stones...yes, while trained eyes (us) are able to distinguish the real from the fake, most of the people that are fake are interested only in impressing other fake people thus not concerning themselves with quality. Sadly, this speaks to the quality of people now. If they treat themselves with fake garbage, don't expect them to be treating other with anything of quality. Yes, quality and virtue is a thing of the past. There is a much deeper and sinister underlying reason for this degradation of humanity.

We now have many places that TAKE NO CASH, no check, Debit or Credit only. I have gone to 3 Car Wash's in MI that have dome that as well as a Greenhouse. Real PIA when you get in the line 1st time, get to the pay booth/machine, a bunch of other cars (truck) behind you and you find out you can't use cash.
Easy fix. Don't go there anymore and find a place that has your same monetary or other values. Only way they change is if they get starved from their precious money.
