Youk, I read through the links above, and don't see anything that says that. But maybe I missed it? But actually, that's probably true for just about ANYWHERE in the entire united states, at any level (city, county, state, fed, etc..). There are ALWAYS rules that forbid "alteration", "disturbance", "damage", "vandalism" and so forth.

But when you think about it, all such phrases distinctly imply an end result, do they not? So if you leave the soil exactly as you found it, with no trace, then *technically* you haven't altered, disturbed, damaged, or vandalized anything, now have you

Sure someone can take issue with the semantics of this, and point out the necessary interim temporary evil of the extraction. You're just going to have to avoid those busy-bodies, and go at low traffic times when lookie-lous like that aren't around to gripe.

On the other hand, if you take those clauses to necessarily apply to your hobby (that "detecting = destruction") then you might as well give it up now, and go find another hobby. There is simply no park in the entire USA where you can go up to the park's dept. front counter and ask "Hi, can I please alter and destroy the park?" and have them say "sure, have a ball".
