Detector(s) used
Minelab Musketeer/ White's MXT
Hi all. A little new to this. Picked up a ML. Detec. and used it a little but I would like to go to something else.
Could anyone tell me if the White's MXT is a good detector for all round use? Was thinking of getting the 5" Excelerator coil
and the Eclipse 4x6 Shooter DD loop with it.
Think this is a good set up for every thing that I might want to search for?

Howdy sniper.
The Whits is a great MD and depending on how many bells and whistels you want whether it be the MXT,XLT, or the DFX. Well what I'm saying is there is always 1 better no matter what.
The 5" coil is good if your hunting in very trashy areas, otherwise you know it won't go as deep.
The DD coil is good in mineralized soil so I'm told,I haven't used one myself.
If your hunting everything anywhere the the best bet is to stick with the 8" coil your detector comes with, until you know what your new detector your hoping to get will do.

He who dies with the most toys wins"maybe" but he also has to pack the extra stuff around in the mean time.

Good luck on your choice.

I use the MXT and would reccomend it to anyone.I find a lot of coins and jewelry with it,depth is good and pinpointing is excellent.Very easy to use also.

A friend of mine has one and loves it. I would also recommend the DD coil.

Hi
You are not going to find any negative postings about the MXT- a fine detector. I use a GMT for nugget shooting. The following is a review by Steve H. on his nugget detector guide for the MXT.

White?s MXT Tracker (List $799, 14.7 kHz) ? This new model from White?s Electronics is possibly the best all-around detector on the market today. The 14.7 kHz frequency makes it more sensitive to gold and jewelry than most coin detectors. What separates the MXT from the other models listed here is its full-range target id circuitry with LCD readout. This makes the MXT a superior coin, relic, and jewelry detector. Thirteen accessory coils are available for the MXT (White's, Jimmy Sierra, EXcelerator, Sun-Ray).

Steve's Opinion - One of my favorite all-around detectors! The MXT is the choice for someone wanting both excellent nugget hunting capability combined with a discrimination system to rival the very best detectors available. The LCD readout is similar to that on many coin detectors, but unique among detectors with serious nugget detecting capability. You get full target id and depth readings, ground phase, battery strength, and more. The coil selection is truly exceptional. The MXT is getting rave reviews from coin, jewelry, and relic hunters, and is a serious contender in the nugget detecting arena. It has proven to be a particularly effective machine at Ganes Creek, Alaska, with many pounds of gold found. The MXT is not quite as sensitive to small gold as the White's GMT, but it may actually be a better choice for those hunting larger gold nuggets.

? ? The MXT is a VERY good all around detector. I believe the 5" Excelerator and Whites 4x6 eclipse are pretty close to each other in terms of where and why you'd use them. Unless you're buying a used one the MXT will come with the stock 950 coil.
? ? The ground mineralization in your area should also play a part in determining which coils you should add. If your soil is not highly mineralized the stock 950 and the Eclipse 5.3 would take care of most of your needs. There's a guy named Monte that is extemely knowledgable with Whites detectors. His favorite coil on the MXT used to be the 5" Excelerator. But now there is an 8" coil available that I believe he likes even better. But that's as far as I will go as I don't want to put words into Montes mouth.
? ? In my opinion from other posts I have read, AND relying on Montes experience, if I had to do it all over again I'd get the new 8" Excelerator and Whites Eclipse 5.3. Which is actually a 6 1/2" coil. ?Similar in size but where as the 5.3 is a concentric coil the 8" Excelerator is a widescan DD design. Each have their own little quirks. Of which I personally know little. The 8" is a round, not ellipticall, coil but IS a DD wrapped configuration. ?Those two coils along with the stock 950 would probably cover all the bases.
? ? Hopefully more people will be adding their choices of coils to this post.
? ? Personally the only other coil I own for my MXT is the Eclipse 5.3. Which is the coil I use most of the time. If I had the money I'd get one of those 8" Excelerators though.
I'll modify my post by adding that there are many considerations to think about when deciding on what xtra coils you'll need. What kind of detecting do you like? Coin? Jewelry? Relic? Prospecting? How mineralized is your soil? How much can you afford? These are only a few examples. In other words as far as coils are concerned there is no easy answer. But I think you'll find the MXT is a very capable all around detector.

I have a Minelab Musketeer Advantage. Got it new in the box for 200.00
Took it out in the woods behind my house today and found a wheat penny 1915 about 4" down.
Not bad for a 1/2 hrs. worth of lookin. lol
