Argued with myself about going back to the road project given it's about complete. But found myself down there swinging over all the dirt they've scrambled. Finding all the usual suspects. Then was certain I was going to pull up another pull tab when I pulled out this beaut.

Just a touch of oxidation, but great detail. Made it worth the trip.

Civil war era coins are always in demand with collectors. And you always pay a premium for them. I wanted at least one civil war gold coin for my collection. I cheaped out and ended up with an 1861 $1 coin. Even a lowly $1 was not exactly cheap.

Thats a beautiful coin in great condition. I still havent dug an IHP yet, guess I need to get out more.

Congrats,

Wow, that does still have some great details left after all these years. Congrats.

I would say, probably dark top soil, and yes, more like sand, not clay. I base that upon other nice coins I have pulled from the area. But a lot of dirt had been pushed around and mixed in with sandy fill dirt...so I did not pull the coin from its original resting place IMO.
