Just got out for 20 minutes. How close does pin-pointer need to be to object?

Depends on which pin pointer you are talking about. Could be close to 3 inches to just about touching the target.

My Garrett Pro pointer hits about 1 1/2 inches on a penny and 2 inches on nickels and quarters.

The bigger the object the deeper the pinpointer will detect just like the coil on your detector. one way to know you are digging a large object is to pinpoint and dig down 2 or three inches. If you aint found it yet its big and deep.

Thanks for all the feedback. It's greatly appreciated.

I have the Garrett pro and there are times that once I dig, I don't get the signal from the pro-pointer but yet the MD still sees it right over the hole. As I keep searching I find the target off to the side by about 2 inches. I rely a lot on the pin-pointer to guide me in.

Yep! Depends on the pin pointer & the size of the target. Some will sound off at 3" and some at 2". But sometimes I think my target moves! Lol

First its easy to test the PP-- sneak up on a coin laying on the ground and see how close you get////
second you cotta watch that you haven't dug past the target and the pp is hitting it on its side---test the side the same way /// I would not leave home without my Garrett pp // Perry
