"Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

Dear N8,
I read your post about some other CRHer in your area getting boxes that you had ordered and I was indeed sorry to hear that. As I was reading responses to your post, I came across one written by "ScottNVA". He mentioned that on two occassions the same thing had allegedly happened to him. He went on to say that a CRHer "ON THIS FORUM" had taken two of "his boxes" one at a time from a bank and scored a "significant coin find" posting it several times on the forum. He went on to say that it was like "lemon juice in the wound" and to watch out because there are "snakes in the grass." Many of the reponders were upset and wanted to know who or name the person who did that. Well, let me tell you all that I think he was referring to me,.....rileyboy. Yes, I reside in the Washington D.C. area and have met ScottNVA on one or two occassions picking up boxes at a specific BOA bank in the area. We chatted and he seemd like a very nice guy. So all of you reading this know.......there are many CRHers in this area and I have had the pleasure of meeting many of them. We have shared good ideas and have been very helpful to one another, so we don't get stuck with each other's dumps". There are so many banks in our area and it's very hard to know who orders from what banks, so no one ever knows when and if you will be ordering from the same bank and or branch. I, personally do not do a large volume of boxes. I always preferred to ask for customer wrapped rolls and tray finds. I have been CRHing in this area since 2002. I am a collector, not just a silver searcher. Over the years many people have joined the hunt and that's fine. Anyway....to get to the point. One day I went to a bank that I usually ordered two boxes from but hadn't been to in a while and asked if they had any boxes. I know they order many boxes a week for many CRHers and sometimes have a box or two left over. The normal teller wasn't there. The teller I spoke to said they had two boxes "if I wanted them". I realized that I didn't have enough money for both, so I took one box. I never asked them if they were someone else's boxes, I just assumed they wanted to get rid of them. I searched through the box a short time later and found a few keepers. I "dumped" the remainders got my money and decided to return for the other box. They said sure, "take it". So I took it. I had no idea that these boxes were "allegedly..as he states..."his boxes". Please be advised that these boxes usually arrive at this bank on Thursday and this is now Monday afternoon the next week. My guess is that they wanted to get rid of them. It was in this box that I found the 1869-S Seated Liberty that I have shown photos of. I just would like you all to know the facts. I am not a "snake in the grass" nor do I "put lemon juice in the wound" and I am disappointed that ScottNVA would think that. In closing, may I suggest to ScottNVA that perhaps he should pick up his boxes on time or advise them he may be a few days late and ask the head teller to put his name on his boxes.
Mistakes will always happen, but I certainly did not intentionally "swipe" his boxes and I'm disappointed that he didn't talk to me about it personally before posting it on the forum. I have sent him a personal message explaining all this and so far no answer. Now! in view of the aforementioned,
I think it is time that I now say good-bye to all you fine people on this form. I have noticed that in the recent months there is too much negative posting and "jealousy feed backs" that have taken this fine forum to all time lows. I know it's not just my thinking, because so many of the outstanding members (Silvercop, Arkiebassman, Mountainman2, Keverett, Maine-Jim, Scooba-Dave, LJ Timbobwey, Joad, RICH HARTFORD R.I.P.....and so many others) have simply gone off the screen.
I am very sad about that and I miss them.
So long everyone and I wish you all the best of luck. "It's out there for the finding."
rileyboy
C'mon "Riley"...it's over now. Let's go take a walk.

Well I read a lot more than I ever post, but having members leave that give so much great information is a shame. Rileyboy is someone that is right up there on top giving honest, useful information. Thanks for making my reading so enjoyable.

Rileyboy, you did nothing wrong. I'd really hate to see this forum lose such a valuable member over something like this. Seems like a big misunderstanding to me.

Every bank that I have ever ordered boxes from has told me that while they will happily order the boxes, bank policy is that they cannot "hold" them for me. If another customer comes in requesting halves before I pick them up, then they will sell them "my" boxes. Thats just the way it is. I've taken road trips all over my area (and way beyond). Occasionally, although rarely, I have stumbled across a bank that has a box or two. I've bought them every time. Did I buy someone's weekly order? Maybe. Has the bank ever sold my boxes to someone else? Yes. Its all part of the game.

I REALLY hope you reconsider Rileyboy. This forum just won't be the same without you.

In my neck of the woods, there are basically 2 reasons a bank would have a box of half dollars. First would be that a customer specifically requested them and second would be that someone dumped a re-rolled box of halves. That’s it.

If I randomly happen upon a bank around me and they have a box available to me then I know that I am either taking a box that another hunter ordered or I am getting a dump. Banks around me for certain, and I believe most banks in general, do not stock boxes of half dollars on the off chance that some random person may come and request one.

I personally am not a fan of so-called ‘box sniping’. As cdickrun64 said, if you want boxes – order boxes. In the very beginning I had one of my banks cut open one of my boxes and give another customer $60 out of it. I told them that I wasn’t very happy with it and it has never happened again.

The part about Scott’s post that I found disturbing was that another hunter FROM THIS FORUM, whom Scott had met in person, knew that Scott had a standing order with a specific branch, went to said branch to get any ‘available’ boxes. That is completely unethical IMO. Sounds to me that ‘Box Sniper’ is using trusted knowledge, insider information if you will, to go to a bank where he basically knows he is getting boxes intended for another hunter. This is far different than just happening upon some random boxes while hunting, which I have less of a problem taking those.

As far as sniping being ok because Scott was unable to pickup his boxes the day they came in… BS. I order ~40 boxes a week and only 18 get picked up the day they come in, 8-12 of them are delivered Tuesday and not picked up until Friday or Saturday. I have good enough relationships with my regular order banks though that NOBODY is getting my boxes but me.

At one of my pickups, I saw 3 more boxes in the vault after my 8 were pulled out for me last week. After getting very nice results from those 8, I’d have loved to go back for the other 3. I know at least 1 other forum member that picks up from this branch and there are at least 2 others besides him. I couldn’t bring myself to even go ask for them because I’d hate for one of them to do it to me.

As far as Rileyboy goes, seems like a nice guy and a very positive force on the forum. It doesn’t seem like this is really about Rileyboy though, more about the actions from 1 hunter / forum member to another.

Just my thoughts.

For this particular issue, the only mitigation available to the hunter is to "request" that the bank not release the coin to anyone else. It is the bank's choice to honor that request or not.

We can't preach honor into other hunters if it isn't inherently there - just like we can't control other hunters' actions by preaching about it.

There will be hunters who brag about the hobby and thereby bring more competition.
There will be hunters who order, pickup, re-roll, and dump back to the same branch.
There will be hunters who make big stinks at banks when not getting their way.
There will be hunters who snipe boxes ordered for other hunters.

Keep a good relationship with your bank and work within the limits of that relationship.

DB23....spot on-agreed completely.

Picking up someone's order or part of an order, by accident or chance is one thing.

But, using "insider knowledge" of how to consistently and intentionaly takes someone's order is LOW.

Bottom line: If you want some boxes-order them!

Re: "Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

My view is that it should be up to the tellers to not give away boxes they have ordered for somebody else. I have pretty much retired from CRHing, but when I would go into a bank and ask if they had any halves and they said "we have a box", I would take it and be happy (as long as it was a sealed box and not somebody's returned dumps).

Wow this site has changed over the years. Since when does a CRHer have to walk into a bank, ask for halves and when offered a box inquire "by the way, did you order these for somebody else?".

My banks that used to order for me NEVER gave my boxes to others. And I have had several occasions when I went to banks asking for halves and they said "we have some, but they were ordered for somebody else and you cannot have them". I never tried to convince them to part with them in such cases.

That is how it should be. If the tellers wanted to sell them to me I would take them. It is up to the CRHer to make sure his/her bank is not giving away their halves.

PS One occurrence I sometimes ran into was some CRHer ordered halves then neglected to pick them up for several weeks. When I went in the tellers were happy to get rid of them because they were stuck holding them for weeks. In those instances they would say "we ordered these for someone and he never came to get them". Had some good scores that way.

Jim4Silver - It has changed here a bit with a lot of whining lately. Teller wants to sell a box to me I buy it. If you order a box get there early and buy it. If the competition beats you to it that is your problem for being late. Have multiple sources for boxes because you will need them if you are going to be in this game for the long run. I always expect there to have been someone there before me and am pleasantly surprised when I make a good score.
