"Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

Dear N8,
I read your post about some other CRHer in your area getting boxes that you had ordered and I was indeed sorry to hear that. As I was reading responses to your post, I came across one written by "ScottNVA". He mentioned that on two occassions the same thing had allegedly happened to him. He went on to say that a CRHer "ON THIS FORUM" had taken two of "his boxes" one at a time from a bank and scored a "significant coin find" posting it several times on the forum. He went on to say that it was like "lemon juice in the wound" and to watch out because there are "snakes in the grass." Many of the reponders were upset and wanted to know who or name the person who did that. Well, let me tell you all that I think he was referring to me,.....rileyboy. Yes, I reside in the Washington D.C. area and have met ScottNVA on one or two occassions picking up boxes at a specific BOA bank in the area. We chatted and he seemd like a very nice guy. So all of you reading this know.......there are many CRHers in this area and I have had the pleasure of meeting many of them. We have shared good ideas and have been very helpful to one another, so we don't get stuck with each other's dumps". There are so many banks in our area and it's very hard to know who orders from what banks, so no one ever knows when and if you will be ordering from the same bank and or branch. I, personally do not do a large volume of boxes. I always preferred to ask for customer wrapped rolls and tray finds. I have been CRHing in this area since 2002. I am a collector, not just a silver searcher. Over the years many people have joined the hunt and that's fine. Anyway....to get to the point. One day I went to a bank that I usually ordered two boxes from but hadn't been to in a while and asked if they had any boxes. I know they order many boxes a week for many CRHers and sometimes have a box or two left over. The normal teller wasn't there. The teller I spoke to said they had two boxes "if I wanted them". I realized that I didn't have enough money for both, so I took one box. I never asked them if they were someone else's boxes, I just assumed they wanted to get rid of them. I searched through the box a short time later and found a few keepers. I "dumped" the remainders got my money and decided to return for the other box. They said sure, "take it". So I took it. I had no idea that these boxes were "allegedly..as he states..."his boxes". Please be advised that these boxes usually arrive at this bank on Thursday and this is now Monday afternoon the next week. My guess is that they wanted to get rid of them. It was in this box that I found the 1869-S Seated Liberty that I have shown photos of. I just would like you all to know the facts. I am not a "snake in the grass" nor do I "put lemon juice in the wound" and I am disappointed that ScottNVA would think that. In closing, may I suggest to ScottNVA that perhaps he should pick up his boxes on time or advise them he may be a few days late and ask the head teller to put his name on his boxes.
Mistakes will always happen, but I certainly did not intentionally "swipe" his boxes and I'm disappointed that he didn't talk to me about it personally before posting it on the forum. I have sent him a personal message explaining all this and so far no answer. Now! in view of the aforementioned,
I think it is time that I now say good-bye to all you fine people on this form. I have noticed that in the recent months there is too much negative posting and "jealousy feed backs" that have taken this fine forum to all time lows. I know it's not just my thinking, because so many of the outstanding members (Silvercop, Arkiebassman, Mountainman2, Keverett, Maine-Jim, Scooba-Dave, LJ Timbobwey, Joad, RICH HARTFORD R.I.P.....and so many others) have simply gone off the screen.
I am very sad about that and I miss them.
So long everyone and I wish you all the best of luck. "It's out there for the finding."
rileyboy
C'mon "Riley"...it's over now. Let's go take a walk.

rileyboy you will be missed by those that recognize your warm contributions to this forum. If everybody on here would take notes from you on how to treat others this forum and world would be a better place.

You know there are about 3 or 4 of ya that i have noticed rag on people and say crappy stuff like this. I haven't been on much in the last 6 months so all these new people I don't know but it appears some new people have brought this down even further.

I guess i just want to say this. People grow up, and if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. And try the golden rule on for size. Treat others how you want to be treated. Do you like to be called names and put down and all the other derogatory things that same of you are capable of....NO

Re: "Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

If you order boxes from your bank, your going to lose some from time to time. It's just going to happen. Sometimes an order wasn't put in because the head teller was on vacation or there was a holiday, sometimes someone just walks in off the street and buys it. If it hasn't happened to you, you probably haven't been doing this for too long. Many of us place weekly orders at multiple banks so if you lose out at one, you still have others.

My main bank orders me 6/week which come in on Thursdays. They order for others, also. Not everybody picks up the boxes they order. If I am in the bank on Mon, Tues or Wed, I will ask them if they have any boxes, and will buy them if they do. I will do this even if my last 12 boxes from the bank have been skunks because I like to take my chances. These boxes take up space in the banks vaults and the banks do not want to hold them for a long time, especially if they have another order coming in. If I am not able to take all 6 when I come in, I let the head teller know and she saves the rest for me. If I don't get in until the next week and someone else has bought some, then that is my doing and not the bank's. I am not happy, but I am not mad at the bank or whoever bought them. I move on - maybe buy a box of quarters or nickels to tide me over.

The source of boxes will probably never run dry in our lifetime. Our connection to that source is the banks and CU's who are willing to order them for our benefit. I am more concerned with keeping good, ongoing relationships with my banks then missing an order every once in a while.

Riley~

If you leave, who will be left to encourage others??

I nearly quit this crazy hobby last summer while enduring a 33 box skunk streak, which I followed up with $1,800 in skunk dimes...that is, until I received a kind and encouraging email from you.

You are a true asset to this forum...please don't leave over a single post or two.

Re: "Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

Again- I think we are losing sight of the true problem with all of this. It is not over coincidentally buying someones boxes. It happens. My post never called anyone out, just hated the bad form of dumping where you eat, and bragging about your finds to the tellers I use(dont want them to get too wise).

The important part of Rileys post is that we are losing a good member of this forum-
No one wants to see him go-
As far as the ones that have directly called out other members I want to copy one of the stuck posts at the top of this forum-

'Don't attack, provoke, insult, or deliberately offend anyone.

All members are equal, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, education, or experience. Never take a superior tone with, or "talk down" to, anyone.

This is taken directly from the Rules.

If a member is violating the rules or causing a disruption, report them to a mod.

If you have a personal problem with another member, use the ignore feature.

If you want to discuss issues concerning another member among yourselves, do so off the forums. Use the PM feature or email, it is not permitted on the forum.'

Re: "Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

Here is my take......please note that I am fairly new to the hobby, having started in October of 2010.

If you want to search boxes, you should order them, otherwise do NOT ask for boxes, as 99% of banks don't just order them to have on hand. If a bank has some on hand, they were probably ordered by a CRH'er......leave them be.....unless you specifically ask to make sure someone else didn't order them.

Also, if you order boxes and the bank sells them to someone else, your beef should be with the bank, not the other CRH'er.

Riley, don't go......Lola will miss "Rileyboy".....as will I.

Good post, N8.

You know, this section has just run off another very old time member. >:(

Just an FYI, I asked for any type of coins to give to a students mother at the School district I work at. Peter(RileyBoy) was the first person to respond to my plea. He didn't just send any old coins, he sent in SILVER coins with a mixture of other coins. You
see this kid was suffering from a parental break-up and found looking at coins a safe haven from everyday stress, Rileyboy recognized that and jumped in as fast as he could. So did SEVERAL other people that are now mostly gone from this forum... :o

Coincidence, I think not. I have spoken with Peter many times over the months and have always had good conversations over the
phone with him, he is one person to look up to as a mentor. He is a virtual cornicopia of knowledge concerning coins and numismatics. For you young people on here, look up the word, has nothing to do with silver. I have seen alot of good people leave this board just for the reason that Peter has now stated, I paid my yearly fee to be a "Charter Member" and noticed that it doesn't mean a tinkers damn.

Guess I am going the way of Rileyboy. I have quit posting my finds on here as well because of all the negativity without posting
pictures of said finds and so on, IT WAS NEVER THAT WAY A YEAR AGO. You can tell when someone is shoveling manure and somebody is sharing the truth without have to post a freaking picture.

Would like to at least say good-bye to a few people,
APush is one. I have always enjoyed your posts and we share something in common, not just collecting.

JRF, you are an inspiration to so many people on this board, family values, hobbies and so on, I will miss your posts as well.

SilverCop, if you are still here and can read this I just wanted you to know that I felt your pain when you went through the skunk streak of boxes last year, it made me cringe each time you posted, take care and I hope your world
turns to silver overnight. :hello2:

Rileyboy, thanks for everything you have done for me, see ya in June or July.

Gilmore Happy, you gave me so many laughs I lost count after 1000, enjoy your children they grow up way to fast and may your search end with a pot full of silver half dallars <grin>

Jeff, you are by the far the fairest moderator I have run across on ALL the boards I belong to <there are many>, please keep up the good work and hopefully I will be back later on.

Re: "Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

Not that how I see it matters in the least, but here's how I see it.

The title of this thread
In my opinion Rileyboy's thread title is used to pinpoint the thread where he read ScottNVAB's angry post that he feels was written about him, not to single out N8dagr8. Also to let N8dagr8 (the author of that thread) know it wasn't really a case of bad form.

Box "sniping"
Any hunter not picking up his/her boxes on the day they are ordered has no leg to stand on, period. I pick up from 6 different banks, and at 3 of them I am there at the exact same time as the armored car service watching them hand truck in my halves since I know their schedule now. The other 3 banks remind me constantly that they don't have the vault space to sit on my boxes, and I need to get them out the same day they come in. All 3 call me as soon as the delivery arrives, and at 1 of those I have no doubt that if a hunter walked in after she hung up the phone with me she'd give him/her my boxes to free up the vault space.

I did a cold call on a Wells Fargo in Jersey that I had never seen before and asked for halves. She said we have $2,800. I said by any chance are any in boxes, and she said $2,000 were so I asked for 2 boxes and got them. Could they have been someone's order, yes. Is that even 1% of my responsibility, no. If it was that hunters day to pick up, then he has a beef with the bank. If he was day(s) late picking his order up, then he a beef with himself. The bottom line is that there's definitely no crying in CRHing.

rileyboy
You did nothing wrong. Yes there are a lot more angry/jealous type posts from the many "youngsters" that now post here, but there are some good young posters too. In my opinion N8dagr8 has been the latter of those two types. As was mentioned above just use the ignore button. I have 2 members currently on ignore and I dont have to put up with the nonsense. Amazingly they both still post in threads I start (I see red letters saying this user is ignored), but now I don't get to see what they're typing, and that's a good thing.

That's how I see it anyway.

rileyboy's friend, Nick

Re: "Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

Rileyboy, i'm so sorry to hear this. Even though i haven't been posting, i still read the posts here daily and will miss your encouragment. You are a gentleman who treats others with respect, you are a good example for everyone here of how to treat one another. You did absolutely nothing wrong in purchasing those boxes. As others have stated, the boxes belong to the bank until purchased by the customer. I'm going to miss you here. Best Wishes, MM2(Joe)

Re: "Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

Riley...if you feel you've had enough of the "drama" here and you feel your time is better spent taking your 4 legged friend for a long walk then by all means that is one lucky dog. I've enjoyed reading your post and it saddens me to see you go. when these children who complain about their boxes being gone start to lack interest and start to leave the forum... expect a few emails from some of your buddies to get you back to the forum.

Happy hunting and try and keep a log for when you come back.
Alex and Cassie
PS.
don't forget to give your dog a treat.

Re: "Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

Rileyboy,
Sorry to see you go but not surprised. I have ordered from the same banks for years and even with the turnover in tellers they all know me well. I allways call the day the coins come in to see if they are there and to let them know when I will be in to get them. If it's on another day the vault teller will allways save them for me. This has built up trust over the years. If I am somewhere I have not ordered and ask if any halves and there are boxes I will allways ask " were they ordered for someone else?". If the teller doesn't know I ask them to find out. Sometimes people have legitimate reasons they cannot come right away and in my opinion these should be respected. Over the years I have found that there are people who order on a whim and never pick up their coins so they will sit in the vault and it seems as though the bank would almost pay you to take them away. I buy these and the bank is happy to see them go. Some of these have been very good boxes. Fair game is often an excuse to allow you to do whatever you want to but does not allways mean what is right or respectfull. This is becoming a dog eat dog enterprise rather than a hobby the roots of which can be traced back to the high price of silver last spring. It used to be centered around the mystery but now is reduced to coin count. I am your age Rileyboy so I am sure you know what I mean. Best of luck to you.

Re: "Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

Rileyboy,
You and I have been around this forum a little while. I too have seen the good the bad and the ugly. It is up to you of course if you want to leave but I wish you would not. You bring some good blood into the mix. Everyone here has faults and I am not exempt. It is easy to lose site of the hobbie and get greedy or want more. I think that is what gets people worked up over a few boxes missed. I started out in metal detecting. I would find a silver coin here and there and be thrilled. Then I found out about coin roll hunting and went to a few banks and found a few silver half dollars in a few hours and I was hooked. I hit every bank in my town and the next and the next until I had gone to 6 different states. Oh the finds I have made. I have a treasure trove now. I will admit I was an addict to this hobbie at one time and would get upset at only finding a handful of silver. Can you believe that, upset at only a HAND FULL!!?? I had lost site of the hobbie and what I loved about it. May we never forget the hobbie and that boyhood interest that always gets our hearts racing. Most of us will never get rich from this hobbie so lets share it and enjoy. Be grateful for what you have and what you are lucky enough to find. God Bless.

P.S I hope you change your mind Riley Boy.

Re: "Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

Rileyboy,

You're one of the most positive forces on this forum along with Apush left. Hate to see you go. I do think that you will be back. Sometimes I leave, focus on other things, and come back. Time heals all wounds.

As far as the box sniping. It happens and is part of the game. The tellers who gave out the boxes may have just handed them out. They might not know who ordered them and would just be happy to get rid of them. Probably assumed it was the same person that ordered them. No one should get too angry over it. There will be other boxes in the future. Bottom line for those who order them, get there as soon as you can to pick up. It can be gone. It's happened to me too and I have picked up someone else's boxes before since they didn't bother to pick up ( I waited a day to do so). As of right now in my area, I personally wouldn't care if I got sniped. Nothing to get excited about in my area. Box snipers have my permission to take half of the boxes I order, just leave half so that I will at least get one skunk. LOL

For people getting upset over it, I'd say strategize so that it won't happen again. Rileyboy, I know you'll be back.

Re: "Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

:( Rileyboy: DON'T GO! Your posts are always welcome & I have enjoyed reading them. I agree with the others that the boxes are owned by the bank until someone buys them. I doubt that anyone would take someone else's boxes on purpose but the old saying goes you snooze, you lose. I get my boxes as fast as possible from my bank. If someone else got one of my boxes. I wouldn't be happy but that's how it goes. I always say "consider the source of the comment". I tend to think that the other person is having a "bad" day when they post or say a comment. Any way, if you do go I will be one of the many people who will miss you. Good luck with your future endeavors & hopefully you will be back.

Re: "Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

Rileyboy I am one of the new guys here and hope YOU DON'T LEAVE. It would not be the same without you, giving congrats or telling people that it is still out there. It is a great HOBBY and we need more people like YOU!!!

Re: "Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

First of all,
I never mentioned a name-this is uncool. I would never call anyone out by name.
Yep, it happened. I work for a living and can not always be at the bank right when the
truck gets there like some folks here. Sorry I still have to work-my bad!
I know the boxes were picked up and I simply used them as an example in story 2.

I deleted this story once the person identified himself and explained the situation. My intention
was never to show the identity of the person. I know boxes will get swiped from time to time.
It's part of the deal. I get it.

However, the story I told about the other person that intentionally was going on a consistant basis
and picking up my order is "the snake in the grass" I was referring to. When the boxes on Monday were junk,
all of mine were there on Tuesday. When they were great on Monday, that Tuesday, this other person (not Rileyboy) would consistantly come and pick up my order, because he knew I ordered there on a weekly basis.
Again, I work for a living. I can not be at the bank at 9am right when they open, to pick them up. I am not sure
what the lead teller's problem was, because she knew it ticked me off when I ordered them, and she gave them away to this same person. Donuts to the lead teller perhaps? I really don't care. Bottom line-it's low and dirty. End of story.

To the person that was doing this (Mr. Snake)-If you want the good boxes, then do like the other 99% of us do here: order on a regular basis, and take the garbage with the good stuff. Stop trying to screw other people. I went through a 40+ box skunk streak from this bank, and this person was no where to be seen. (I won't share how much fun a 40+ box skunk streak is! I am sure some others on here can appreciate the good times that are had!) Then finally the boxes got decent and guess what....immediately this person went up and bought all of them 30 minutes before I could get there. Not once, but several times!!!! GREEDY!

Rileyboy-you are a good guy and I apologize to you. It happened. You got some boxes meant for me. Oh well. It happens. At least you did not intentionally do it. You need to stay on the forum. I will go back to mostly lurking as I have done for the past few years.

Re: "Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

Another one gone. Very sad indeed. I do not post near what I used to as I just cannot imagine getting involved in this type of mess. I deal with teenagers every day -- I expect that from them . . . but not grown folks.

Thank you Freedom for your kind words.

Rileyboy--I will miss you. I have also had a phone conversation with Rileyboy and he is a wonderful gentleman.

Either way, the Forum has indeed changed from what was two years ago. I remember folks responding to everyone's finds--no matter how small or how large. Folks came to the rescue of others--meaning if they had a question, at least 10-20 people would answer and not ridicule them if they didn't read a previous post or get out the Red Book. I can count at least 5 times I had a keeper that was worth more than face value--and others were kind enough to point it out. And, I have even had one regular here view a coin, send it back, and then gave me a coin to boot to add to my meager collection. Great Karma!

Times are a changing. As they always are. But for this ol' gal, proper manners will always be at the forefront--regardless of pomp and circumstance.

HSH,

apush :read2:

Re: "Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

A simple misunderstanding. leasons are learned, now go and find the silver.

Re: "Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

APush, please don't leave as well. Again, I know that I'm new here, but people like you and Riley were the reason I joined. People like the both of you were kind enough to give me advice on proper etiquette and always had kinds words to say. I don't think that this forum is a lost cause. Don't let the words of the sophomoric drown out the words of the kind ones.

Re: "Just Bad Form by N8dag8": rileyboy

In a situation like this the person who has done something wrong would be the bank teller. So if it is any consolation do not feel guilty rileyboy.
