It's been raining all day, thought I'd go out to the shed and clean this hatchet head I found a little while back. I probably could have let it air out a little more but it cleaned up decent. Not sure how to age them but it looks pretty old to me. The place I found it goes back to around the 1780's, My guess is it might be from the early 19th cen.? Hoping some of you guys can help me pin down a approx date. IMG_0450.JPGIMG_0463.JPGIMG_0462.JPG

Hey D2. That may be an old shingle hammer. The hole was for a pin, used to set the shingle exposure. Here is an exampleroofing hammer.jpg

If you google that there are many styles. Just a thought.

I didn't even think about that Joe. Thanks for the example. I was guessing the hole was a nail puller. It has a little slit that goes from the hole to the bottom edge..Wonder if they used something similar back in the day for wooden shingles? IMG_0467.JPG

Yes, that is mostly when they were used. The hatchet was used to split the shake. I'd say from the visible wear that it's pretty old. Nice find
